The Wrong Brother’s Temptation

Chapter 226

Sinna

Oh wow, she was friends with him already? I didn’t hear him asking advice from her about his personal life.

My grip on the fork tightened further. I was fairly certain I’d bent the tines slightly.

“Interesting,” Connor replied after a beat, and I couldn’t read his tone at all.

I couldn’t tell if he was humoring her or genuinely considering it, and the not–knowing sat in my stomach like something cold and heavy.

“Do you have someone specific in mind?”

Did he really ask that?

“I might,” she answered in a light and teasing voice.

I imagined her just throwing herself at him at this point but Connor seemed to lean back and sip on his drink.

“I am touched by your concern” Connor replied, drink in hand that he continued sipping slowly.

“I just don’t understand why you would be so worried for me”

“I care about seeing the right people end up in the right positions,” she answered and she must have leaned back because the chair creaked a little.

“It would be a waste, watching you compromise your future for someone so….clumsy and ordinary.”

The fuck did she say I was?

She called me all the names possible while sounding pretty happy about it. And Connor didn’t correct her, didn’t say a word in my defense.

That bloody hurt.

Granted I wasn’t the most beautiful woman to walk the ground with my freckles and unruly hair but I had gotten rid of my glasses long back. And I was also not with him for just money or because he was handsome.

I dug my nails into my palm under the table, breathing carefully through my nose, and forcing myself to stay perfectly still.

It was taking my entire willpower to not turn around and not do a single one of the several violent things currently competing for space in my imagination.

Connor still hadn’t said a thing in my defense but I heard the server return to refill glasses, the small interruption swallowing whatever Connor might have said next when he received a phone call.

And I sat there in an agony of not knowing, my phone suddenly, catastrophically loud in my purse.

buzzing against my hip with a ringtone I’d forgotten to silence.

nged for it, smashing the power button so hard I nearly dropped the phone entirely.

I clutched it close to my chest and sat rigid for several seconds, genuinely praying to the Moon Goddess and anyone else who might be listening, that neither of them had noticed me.

I had closed my eyes bracing for Connor to come up and drag me out of the seat but when after several seconds passed with no footsteps angrily approaching my table, I let out a breath.

Five minutes passed, maybe more in which I sat still, trying to make my heart to beat steadily, while the two continued to talk.

I lost track, too busy straining to catch fragments of a conversation that had drifted back into business terms I couldn’t fully follow, until Connor’s voice cut through again, clearer this time.

“Can we sign the contract now?” Connor asked after a while.

“What’s the rush?” The girl countered.

“I was hoping to meet the other business partner too” Connor answered.

Wait, there were more than one of these lying witches vying for him?

“Not before you see a sample,” the girl answered and I just felt even more clueless than before.

Sample? What sample?

My brain scrambled through possibilities of it being some kind of fabric, food, or a product mock–up but couldn’t come up with anything that made sense in the context of a late night dinner.

“Sure then,” Connor seemed to agree. “Lead the way”

A second later, I heard the scrape of chairs which meant both of them had gotten up now.

I didn’t turn around and sat stoically, spine locked, and listening to footsteps moving away from the table.

The sound was growing fainter, and the panic of losing him entirely after everything I’d already sacrificed this evening propelled me into motion.

I grabbed the menu off the table and held it up in front of my face like a shield, angling my body just enough to track them without fully turning.

Through the narrow gap above the menu’s edge I watched two figures crossing toward a door on the far side of the restaurant. Connor had already stepped through it, and was holding it open for her.

Seeing that I was not within his range of sight, I hastily got up and took cover of the pillars and potted plants to follow wherever they were going.

How many freaking doors and sections did this stupid hotel have? Every few minutes this girl was dragging Connor deeper inside.

I knew I had promised to just stay long enough but after hearing all her words, how could I just walk away when she was openly flirting with him?
