The Wrong Brother’s Temptation

Chapter 234

Sinna

I stood in the middle of it, under lights that suddenly felt ten times hotter.

Below me, the club had turned into a maze of swaying bodies and laughter.

I couldn’t even see Connor’s table anymore because too many people were in the way.

Run, my brain said calmly. Get off this stage and run.

Maybe I could backstage, change into something decent and come up with some wild excuse to show up in front of Connor.

I was wondering whether I should tell him Jane stood me up or not as I quickly turned toward the curtain and took two steps.

My foot was still hovering in the air to take the third step when I felt a hand land on my shoulder.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

I turned around to see Bob staring down at me.

Bob looked like a chubby bear with a balding head that had appeared out of nowhere, clipboard tucked under his arm.

“I…water” I managed.

His smile returned and he held a glass in front of me. “Here”

I looked from him to the glass and the smile on his face returned though his eyes were furious.

“You’re not leaving me with an empty stage.”

“I…wanted to both drink water and visit the washroom”

He didn’t believe me.

“You must be tired, sweetheart. Relax a bit. Here take this”

He held that glass of water directly in front of my nose.

“I can’t do this,” I whispered. “I’m sorry, I really can’t. I just need to…”

“You’ll do fine,” he said, in that same cheerful tone, and thrust that glass in my hand.

“You are getting cold feet, it happens. If you don’t want to dance, its fine, just exit gracefully love”

I looked up at him. “Really?”

He nodded. “The girls are going to earn a lot tonight. Its okay if you want to step back tonight even though I wished you didn’t chicken out at the last minute”

My shoulders sagged in relief. “Thank you so much for understanding”

smiled at me. “Drink, you will feel better”

I took that glass and gulped it down in one go because my throat felt like sandpaper.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.

“This water….it tasted funny”

He took the glass back from my hand, put it away and then turned me to look at the audience.

“Look ahead. And tell me what do you see?”

I blinked, the bright white lights shining on the stage suddenly blinding me.

I raised a hand to cover my eyes a little.

“I…uh…all the girls are dancing and the men are showerign them with money”

“Exactly”

His hands on my shoulders pressed on a little as if he was tightening his grip on me. His voice still stayed

sweet.

“Did I tell you how much they can carn in a night just by a few hours of dancing?”

I shook my head. “Not really”

“A lot more than you can even imagine. And when you girls earn. I get five percent of that too.”

I stared nervously ahead.

“Imagine doing all the hard work, getting all the guests in a room together, arranging the venue and the dance… yet I earn mere peanuts because I am not a sexy, hot looking girl.”

“But I…”

He shoved me forward so hard I stumbled to the middle of the stage. “Smile, sweetheart. I am not about to lose my earnings when the wealthiest of the men in the town are here”

“Please, listen to me. If you want money, I can get you that. My boyfriend… I mean my partner can give you everything you desire”

He looked at me suspiciously. “He can? What’s his net worth? How much does he earn in a day?”

I nodded vigorously. “He can buy this pub, the hotel and the entire staff here and that wouldn’t put a dent in his pocket”

Bob’s eyes widened as greed shone in them.

“Really? He must be some bigshot. Who is he?”

I pointed at Connor seated in the front. “Him”

Bob followed the direction of my pointed finger, saw Connor surrounded by Blondie and a few more girls who were competing for his attention and slowly looked back at me.

I stiled brightly at him but then Bob broke out into laughter, pointing from Connor to me.

“You? Him? You both…” He began wheezing, clutching his stomach like this was the biggest joke of his life.

“Its not funny…”

I began and he straightened immediately, all the laughter wiped away from his face.

“Exactly. Connor Ashford, the casanova, who even my best trained dancers are failing to catch attention of. He is your partner?”

Bob looked me up and down like I was made of nothing but dirt and rags.

“Yes, in fact…”

“Shut up. he would not even look at someone so ugly and ordinary like you…”

He said the exact same words Lily had said.
