Bob caught the check midair and held it up to the light, squinting at the signature.

He ran his thumb over the ink like the man had just not admitted to wanting to kill someone right in front of him in a room full of people.

Bob was just too invested in the check and his eyebrows shot up, his whole face lit up like a slot machine.

“It’s real,” he breathed, almost reverently.

“Of course it is, you fool. Now step away!” The bald man muttered impatiently.

He tucked it into his pocket, patted it twice, and stepped away from me with a little bow, like a waiter clearing a table.

“She’s all yours, sir.”

What?

My stomach turned to ice.

“Bob,” my voice cracked. “You can’t just…”

But he had already turned his back.

The bald man clapped his hands together and rubbed his palms like he’d just been served a feast.

His friends started hooting behind him, banging on the table, and stomping their feet.

Meanwhile his sidekick, a short man with a beard came to whisper in his ears.

“All the guests have been told to start leaving slowly so that he won’t get suspicious.”

My ears twitched and I tried to focus on the conversation.

The bald man cast a glance around sneakily. “And he is wasted?”

The bearded man nodded his head. “Yes, he has been forced to drink five bottles already. He will be stoned in a few minutes”

My eyes widened in alarm.

So they had planned to drug and incapacitate Connor so he wouldn’t be able to put up a fight or save himself.

I wildly looked around, there had to be someone here who could help.

But the guests were scattering and leaving, some willingly, some being threatened with guns.

“What are you doing?” I asked, unable to help myself.

The bald man gloated. “Oh me? Nothing much, just getting a thorn that’s been bothering me for a long time. out of my way.”

Connor was still being circled by the girls, and he was sprawled on the couch now, one hand thrown back on the chair along with a leg.

He looked utterly wasted.

Lily, where was she? I tried looking for her but she had left the place long ago. Just how many people had planned this?

I had to come up with a plan and for that I needed time…and a functioning brain.

I shook my head, willing my brain to not crash out due to fear and anxiety.

I needed to stall for time so I looked up at the bald man, and blurted out the first thing that popped up in my head.

“You are so rich‘

He blinked, taken aback by the fact that I wasn’t trying to run away from him anymore.

“Taht I am”

He answered with a nod.

“And you have so many men, such power at your command”

He looked around at his friends, apparently pleased.

“Of course”

“I… know you paid a lot of money for me. But…I still don’t know your name.”

I softened my voice, trying to not sound repulsed at the fact that I was trying to have a conversation with the

creep.

“The name is Marcus, but my friends call me Marco”

I looked up at him with fake admiration. “Ooh, like the mafia lord?”

He considered it. “Uh…sure. I have big plans and do you know what you have to do to become the lord?”

I shook my head. “I don’t”

He looked at Connor and back at me like he was sharing a secret.

“You have to take the reigning king and his sons down.”

He pointed a finger in Connor’s direction. “That bastard…I am going to take my sweet time draining his blood. He has made me and my family suffer a lot.”

I tried to sound mildly amused. “He is your enemy?”

Marcus nodded. “That arrogant asshole is everybody’s enemy. He fucking took all my money I laundered against another alpha and didn’t even use it himself, just gave it off to some stupid charity.”

I gasped. “How…dare ht?”

Baldy puffed his chest out, looking at his friends and showing them how he was getting a shy, reserved girl to open up to him and adore him in less than a minute.

I shook my head, fighting the drug’s drowsiness. I had to stay awake and alert. For both of us.

I kept glancing at Connor, trying to find the best chance to grab him and run for the door without getting either of us hurt.

How could he just get drunk and wasted so easily? I was going to somehow save him and then give him a dose of his own medicine, reminding him of how he asked me to pay attention, stay focused etc, driving me so mad that I had an outburst.

“Don’t worry, tonight is double celebration for me. I kill him and I give you an unforgettable night and if you satisfy me, I can even shower you with all the loot I snatch from him”

I tried not to scream at Connor to get the hell up.

Then to my surprise, he actually did get up from his seat. For one wild moment, I thought he was back to his senses but then Connor raised a bottle in his hand and began chugging it down his mouth as the girls all

cheered for him.

Baldy’s friends all laughed mockingly at that scene.

“This guy is going to be the greatest alpha of the town? Such a waste of space!”

Baldy’s sidekick looked at his boss reverently. “After you take over his pack, can I be your beta? I have proved my loyalty by doing everything you asked.”
