Saying so the boss disconnected the phone leaving his very confused and afraid employee shouting in

alarm.

“Boss, but…wait…”

Connor immediately tried to pull away and run but I grabbed him by the wrist. As a result, he lost his balance and something crashed down onto the floor with a loud sound.

“Huh, who’s there?”

The man might have looked around once before bolting outside. Connor swore under his breath and ran after him, ignoring my shouts.

“Wait, Connor!”

He didn’t and ran fast, following the footsteps of the man running for his life. I struggled to keep up.

I somehow forced my legs to keep moving, picking out a path through the debris lying all around me before running down the exit at the back of the hotel.

We were on the top floor and the metal staircase wound down to the ground level. Connor was following down in the dimly lit staircase, skipping steps and the metal creaking under his weight,

“Connor wait” I shouted and the man he was following looked up to see connor a few floors up and me all the way on the top floor staircase steps, staring down at him.

Or that’s what I thought.

“Get her!” He shouted and I blinked in confusion, wondering what it meant until Connor looked up, his eyes growing wide.

“Duck!”

I blindly did and then I felt a whoosh of air as something swept past on top of my head, exactly where my face had been a minute ago.

I looked up to see a man swinging a knife at me.

“Run, Sienna!”

Connor shouted and I nodded hastily, trying to run but my foot caught in something and the man swung the knife again.

“Fuck it!”

Connor looked at the man running away from him once before he started climbing up. My attacker noticed him arriving and simply jumped off the roof by the time Connor reached the topmost stair.

He rushed towards the edge and I heard the sickening thump of something drop down on the ground

That man had just killed himself and Connor slammed his fist hard on the nearest wall, creating a clear fist shaped dent in it.

I slowly straightened, heart pouding hard as the hotel staff and police arrived at the scene at last.

Connor simply stared down at the man who had fallen down to his death, blood pooling around him.

I slowly followed up after him, limping a little.

“Are you okay?”

Connor didn’t reply but his hands gripped the edge of the staircase hard enough to turn his knuckles white.

Behind us the staff and police were already starting to find out about what happened. I inched closer to Connor, staring at the blood on his sleeve that must have gotten torn during the fight.

“There’s blood…you should get yourself cleaned” I mumbled slowly.

“Not mine,” He answered without looking at me.

“But Connor you should just…”

He leveled his angry gaze at me and the words momentarily died down on my throat.

“Do you have any fucking idea what you just did?”

“I…”

“This…is on you”

“Really.” I stepped over a few broken pipes to get even closer to him.

“I was trying to save you!”

“From what?”

“From the drink!”

! “I didn’t need saving.”

He said it flatly. Like the thing I’d done, the thing I’d risked, was nothing. Like I was nothing.

My eyes stung. I blinked hard.

“Two drops,” I mumbled, and my voice shook. “She put two drops in your glass. I saw it. I tried to warn you. And those men….they were trying to kill you…”

“You should have left,” he cut me off. “The moment you knew I was here. You should have turned around and gone home. In fact, you should have never come here. You have no idea what we’ve lost”

“You could have been drugged!”

“I fucking killed them all. For fuck’s sake, Sienna, I’m not a child.” Connor’s voice rose again.

either am I so stop treating me like one!” I shot back.

“Then stop acting like one!”

The words rang across the stupid metal staircase, and something inside me went completely still.

I was not a child, not a partner to him, not even someone worth a thank you who was just worried sick he could be drugged, that he could die.

To him I was just a clumsy idiot who’d gotten in his way.

I threw up my hands. “I can’t believe you’re doing this! I ran through a strip club barefoot! I almost got
