He took a step away from the stairs, motioning for me to follow him.

“Come on. I can talk to you like old times. We could put on a movie in the east lounge. You used to fall asleep halfway through and then deny it for a week. I still have that terrible comedy you liked…the one with the exploding cake. We can mock it the entire time.”
I shook my head. “Aaron, what are you hiding from me? Is he okay?”
“Since when do you care about him so much, Sia?” Aaron blurted out and a flicker of mild annoyance passed across his face. Then he softened again, the way he always did with me.
“He is my boyfriend, Aaron”
“He is your bully, Sia”
I tried not to roll my eyes and he noticed my expression.
“Okay fine. I won’t mention him.”
He gave my elbow a gentle squeeze. “But I’m trying to help you, Sia. You’ve been stressed. I noticed you have asked him to train you and I know you don’t have time to learn it all in a matter of days or weeks. Maybe I could train you”
I tried not to scoff. “I never took you for a gym enthusiast”
“Hey” He looked offended. “Not everybody has to have a six pack to be strong and fit.”
“Good for you” I tried to walk away but he again ran up to me, reaching for my arm.
“Let me take your mind off things for a little while. You don’t always have to run straight at the problem the second you wake up.”
“Okay” I breathed out and I placed my hand over his to remove it.
His expression brightened for a fraction of a second, like the contact itself pleased him. Then I said, “I need to find Connor so if you can’t help me, let me look for him myself,” and the almost–smile disappeared.
He exhaled through his nose and replied curtly. “He’s in dad’s study.”
My pulse jumped. “This early? Why? What happened?”
I stepped around him to change direction to now walk towards Alpha Asher’s office.
Aaron moved with me, blocking the corridor with his body. “Sia. Don’t. You can’t just walk in there. Dad doesn’t take interruptions well on a good day, and this morning already looked tense when I left.”

That only made me eager to go check on Connor myself.
“I’ll apologize.”
“That’s not how it works and you know it.”

He caught my wrist this time, not hard, but firm enough to stop me. “Come with me instead. Please. You don’t need to put yourself in the middle of whatever that is. Let me handle the asking around while you go eat something.”
“I think I’m already in the middle of it.” I pulled my wrist free as carefully as I could. “If Connor is in trouble because of last night, I’m not staying outside.”
“Last night?” Aaron’s brows drew together. “What happened last night?”
“Nothing you need to worry about.” I stepped past him. “I’m going.”
He tried one more time, moving sideways to block the turn toward the study wing. “At least let me go with you..”
“No!”
Something in my voice must have landed, because he stopped fully blocking the path. He still looked unhappy about it, and his jaw was tight, but he didn’t reach for me again.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” he muttered.
I didn’t wait for another argument and simply walked the remaining length of the corridor with my heart beating too fast and pushed the study door open before I could talk myself out of it.
It was not my first time entering Alpha Asher’s study but somehow the room felt larger than I last time and quieter than the rest of the house. Heavy curtains were half–drawn against the morning light.
Alpha Asher stood behind the desk in a charcoal button–down with the sleeves rolled once, arms braced on the wood as if he had been in the middle of making a point.
Connor stood a few feet away from him in a black long–sleeve shirt and dark pants, posture straight, and his hands behind his back.
I felt immediately relieved to see that Alpha Asher had just been talking and there was no sign of violence so far.
My gaze flicked to Connor again and tried to read the room.
He looked calm and composed like always. The only sign of last night was a faint shadow of fatigue under his eyes that I might have imagined.
Both of them turned when the door opened.
My courage nearly deserted me on the spot. Alpha Asher’s presence pressed against my nerves in a way Connor’s never did.

My mouth went dry and my palms felt damp. I wasn’t sure if he was using his alpha aura on me still, the words came out before I could stop them, too fast and too honest.
“Please don’t punish Connor. He didn’t do anything wrong…”
