Chapter 87
Sienna
I heard her plop on the bed and I imagined her twirling an idle strand of hair with her finger.
“Where is Aaron?”
“He entered the ballroom with Sandra”
“Goddess, how do you even tolerate seeing him with that bitch?”
“Jane, you are trailing off again!”

“Well then just get to know your blind date and see if he is not an asshole like your last one, flirt with him a little. Take your mind off Connor for some time. And call me the second anything goes wrong.”
I chuckled despite myself. “What are you going to do? Run over to this ball and slap the shit out of him?”
“Don’t underestimate me, I might do that”
I laughed at that.
“And Sienna?”
“Yes?”
“I truly hope you really know what you are doing.”
I didn’t but I lied. “Sure, thanks girl.”
The second I disconnected, my phone buzzed.
Connor: If you don’t start replying back, we are having some serious talk.
Me: I got a headache and I am going to sleep. Talk to you later.
I sent a text just to stop him from texting me, thanked the Goddess for the pocket the dress came with to shove my phone inside it and was about to enter the ballroom when a bouncer stopped me.
“Please wear one of the masks, miss. This is a masked ball”
He gestured to a dozen or so staff members standing outside the entrance, all holding trays filled with a variety of masks.
I picked one on a whim, a half mask that only covered my eyes and nose.
Connor wasn’t so easily persuaded so now he was calling me. I grudgingly picked it up.
“Do you know when to stop? I told you I was going to sleep and yet you are….

I rambled for a while, taking out all my frustration on him and realized I was the only one who was talking so I stopped abruptly.
“Connor, are you even there?” I asked into the phone and then I heard his voice that did something to my insides.
“Yeah, just…listening to your voice…”
His voice had no business sounding so husky and gravely.
“Heard me? Good, now go to sleep”
“Are you telling me you are sleeping with seventy woofers around you because what the hell is that noise?”
Oh shit.
I covered the speaker but he had already heard enough.
“Where are you, sweetheart? Your boyfriend is missing you.”
“Look, you are not my boyfriend. You are just a way to get to Aaron.”
His voice dropped a beat, that casual cockiness disappearing when he next spoke.
“Is that so? Then answer me, did you not think of me even once while I was gone?”
“Nope,” I said, and just then someone appeared at my elbow.
“Sienna?”
I turned to look at a man wearing a dark jacket, and an easy smile.
“That’s me”
“Who is that?” Connor asked immediately through the phone.
“Nobody, I have to go,” I said.
“Don’t you dare lie to me…”
“Bye, Connor.” I hung up.
Meanwhile, the man extended his hand. “Hi, I’m Josh,” he said. “Aaron set up our blind date tonight. He has told me about you.”
“Oh, he did?” I asked, slipping my hand in his to give it a shake.
“Quite a lot, actually.”
He looked decent, had a good smile and seemed familiar “He said you were going through a rough time and could use a friendly face.”

Wait what?
I was going to have words with Aaron about phrasing. “That’s very kind of him,” I replied.
“Yeah, if you remember, we were in one of the group projects back in grade 7…”

Josh kept rambling but I was too busy silencing my phone because a string of messages from Connor were popping up on my screen.
Aaron materialized from somewhere suddenly.
“Oh, good that you guys met already,” he muttered, clapping Josh on the shoulder.
“Good. Josh has been asking about you for weeks already and…” Josh gave him a sideways look and Aaron corrected himself, “…anyway, shall we go in?”
He then said to Josh. “I hope you will take good care of her while I enjoy the ball with my girlfriend.”
