Chapter 88

Josh was good company, it turned out. He asked questions and listened to the answers I gave attentively.
“So how long have you known Aaron?” Josh asked
“Most of my life” and he nodded
“He mentioned you’re going through something with Connor Blackwood,” he said, after a while.
I looked at him. “He mentioned that specifically?”
“He was worried about you,” Josh answered. “He said Connor’s not the guy he wanted you to end up with.”
“So does he think I should end up with you?” I asked and realized what a stupid question it was.
“I’m sorry, I get awkward around strangers” I clarified and Josh smiled. “Aaron told me that too”
Apparently, Aaron had told him a lot about me to make him impress me it seemed.
My phone buzzed and I knew without a doubt it was Connor but what surprised me was the picture he had
sent.
It was a photograph of me and Josh, taken from somewhere across the room merely seconds ago.
The angle was from above slightly, from somewhere I couldn’t identify.
Connor: Found you.
My heart started racing. Connor had taken a taxi from the airport and arrived straight at the ball. And he had already spotted me with Josh..
I turned in a slow circle and let my gaze roam all over the massive hall. All I saw was multiple people wearing masks, mingling and dancing while staff scurried around carrying trays laden with drinks.
How the hell was I supposed to identify Connor in this room?
Connor: Let go of this new guy or I’ll make him disappear.
How dare he show up and demand that when he spent all of his last night letting some girl drool over him?
Me: Stop texting me or I’ll block you.
Connor: I’m jetlagged and all I want to do is talk to you so stop being difficult.
Me: We can talk tomorrow. I’m on a date and put the phone away and turned back to Josh who was watching me with a mild expression.

“Is everything alright?”
I nodded. “Yep, I told my friend about the ball and she was asking for pictures,” I lied.

“Oh, in that case…” He stepped beside me, and pulled out his phone to click a picture of us and sent it to me before I could argue. “Send them this.”
My phone rang before I could even look at the picture.
1 answered because I’d learned that not answering didn’t stop anything. “What the fuck is your problem?”
“Why the hell are you on a date?” Connor’s voice, slightly breathless, like he’d been moving fast.
“Josh is Aaron’s friend”
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”
“You’re not supposed to feel anything,” I said, and stepped away from Josh slightly, lowering my voice. “You were in London with some girl when you told me you were going to sign a deal”
“I did sign the deal. I can show you the papers”
“I don’t want to see the damn papers,” My voice grew angrier. “I don’t want to know if you spent the night în her bed or invited her to yours.”
“Speckles…” He said, his voice growing slightly amused. “Are you jealous?”
“You don’t have the right to call me jealous. Why would I be? Its not like we are a real couple…” I stopped to take a breath and composed myself. “Look, what Aaron said about you is true. You don’t do relationships and I need more than a fling,” I said. “I realized that while you were away so I’m meeting other people.”
I was met with a heavy silence which told me of all the words he had expected to hear from me, these weren’t the ones he had imagined.
“Are you?” he said, voice growing steely.
“Yes.”
“Do you think,” he said, slowly, like he was choosing each word and putting it down deliberately, “that anyone else is actually going to give you what you want?”
“And what is that?”
“Do you think Josh, or whoever else Aaron parades in front of you, is going to make you feel the way you felt at the resort?”
“Stop it”
“Did you miss me even for a second, speckles?” His voice had dropped a register. “Did you stay awake in your bed recalling how good it felt when I kissed you, when you writhed under me?”

“Shut up,” I whisper yelled.

“Did you, in explicit detail, recall the way it felt when I had you against that wall. When you were begging me to claim you?”
“I was not begging!” I replied indignantly.
“You absolutely were,” he assured me, and I could hear something underneath the teasing that was not teasing at all. “You asked me three times.”
My face was growing hot and I was fanning myself with my free hand.
Josh was a very discreet distance away looking at the dancers and letting me have the conversation.
“I’m hanging up, and don’t you dare come near me or talk to me again” I warned him.
“I hoped it wouldn’t come to this,” Connor clicked his tongue reproachfully.
“Come to what?” I asked even when I knew I shouldnt‘
“Me having to physically come and find you,” he said. “To give you what you keep pretending you don’t want.”
“You don’t know what I want.”
“I know exactly what you want,” he said too confidently. “And by the end of tonight, I promise you that you’ll be asking me for it.”
“You’re too full of yourself”
I hung up and put my phone on silent because I didn’t even want to hear the buzz of the notifications.
Josh reappeared beside me. “All okay? You look a bit flustered”
“Perfectly fine,” I said. “Could we find somewhere slightly quieter? My head’s hurting due to the loud music”
“Of course.” He guided me through the crowd toward a corner near the far wall where the music was slightly muted, found a chair, and helped me sit.
“Wait for me, I’ll get drinks for us” I nodded and he disappeared.
I had barely taken the seat and was looking around the place when a server appeared with a glass of juice and set it in front of me.
