Because the location was deep in Yaym, the local police had already apprehended Harvey by the time Penelope and Theodore arrived. However, there was no sign of the siblings.
Inside a desolate mountain cabin, Harvey sat handcuffed to a wooden table, guarded by two officers while the rest of the squad scoured the woods for his children.
"Just past this mountain is the border. Harvey's original plan was to smuggle his son out of the country and contact an overseas clinic for a second transplant," the lead officer explained to Theodore.
"When he realized we were closing in, he made his daughter take the boy and run. He stayed behind. He said he's willing to confess to everything, but he insisted on speaking with you first, Mr. Stapleton."
Harvey used to be a highly successful businessman. He could have lived a life of ultimate luxury, but his selfish desires resulted in an innocent boy's death, forcing him to fake his own demise and live as a fugitive.
Now, he looked like a ghost. He was emaciated, his overgrown hair thoroughly streaked with gray. Dressed in filthy, tattered rags, he resembled a common beggar.
He had been sitting cross-legged on the dirt floor, but at the sound of the officers, he looked up. The moment his eyes locked onto Theodore, he scrambled to his feet and then collapsed to the ground, begging.
"Mr. Stapleton! I swear to you, we had no idea the boy was your brother at first. If I had known, I never would have dared to touch him!" Harvey pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.
"I know I deserve to die. I stayed behind to face the law! I am the only one to blame here. If you want revenge, take it out on me! I brought this upon myself, and I deserve every bit of it!"
"But my kids are innocent. They had no idea what I was doing. I'm begging you, please show some mercy and leave them out of this."
Harvey was practically groveling. He adored his children and was, in his own way, a devoted father, but he had coldly ripped away another family's child.
