The moment Gardenia walked through the door, her eyes locked onto Natalie, silently sizing her up.
All because of what Lara had said.
Was she really that pathetic? Was she truly no match for Natalie?
No. Natalie was nothing but a pretty face.
Without Hassan, she had absolutely nothing.
"Where's Jude?" she asked, noticing his empty seat.
Zachary spoke up. "He looked pretty awful when he came back a minute ago. Probably had an emergency. He grabbed the kid and left."
Gardenia knew he was likely reopening the investigation into Cora's case.
"Want a drink, Gardenia?" Zachary offered.
"Just a little," she replied.
She handed him her glass, and Zachary poured a generous amount. "Don't worry. If you get drunk, we'll just have Lara take you home! You two can catch up on old times."
Gardenia's fingers tightened around her glass.
Lara laughed. "Yeah, exactly. Let's just go to my place. We can have a sleepover."
"Haha, look at you two, so close now," Zachary teased. "Alright, I'll pour you a bit more to give you a head start."
Gardenia pressed her lips together. "I'll just get a cab."
Lara leaned in close, her heavy perfume overwhelming.
"Why take a cab and waste money? Oh, right, our little Gardenia isn't hurting for cash anymore. And here I am, still trying to save you money like the old days. Aren't I just the best?"
Gardenia lowered her head and stayed quiet.
"Natalie, want a drink?" Zachary lifted the bottle. "I'll pour you a glass."
Before she could answer, Hassan blocked it. "She's not drinking."
Zachary chuckled. "Look at that. Having a partner here really makes a difference, so protective. If I'd known, I would've brought my wife too."
Someone next to him joked, "If you brought your wife, you wouldn't be allowed to drink right now. You really want that?"
