Vivian wasn't hearing a word of it. She screamed back at Hayden through her tears, "Right! She's so kind! She's so generous! She's the only one worthy of the Wycliffe family! You all keep saying you want to 'comfort' me, but all you really want is for me to pack up and leave quietly without making a scene! So your perfect little family can live happily ever after!"
With that final shriek, Vivian slammed the door in his face.
Hayden stood in the hallway for a long time, an unbearable weight settling in his chest, before finally turning away.

Over at the studio, Eleanor was still waiting in Suzie's office. Whenever Suzie was busy, Eleanor happily sat on the sofa, content to wait. She wanted to stay until the kids got out of school so they could pick them up together. She was dying to properly spend time with her beautiful grandchildren.
When Suzie finished wrapping up a photoshoot, she headed straight for Mia's office.
"Mia, what was in that package earlier? You looked terrified."
Having been coached by Hayden, Mia had her story straight. She forced a casual smile. "Oh, Mr. Wycliffe checked on it. The courier delivered it to the wrong address. I only freaked out because it had this really creepy, ugly doll inside."
To sell the lie, Mia even pulled up her phone, showing Suzie a generic image of a gothic-style doll online. "See? It was like one of these. I mean, who even buys this stuff? Just looking at it gave me the creeps."
Suzie glanced at the screen and smiled softly. "Ah, I see. I've seen these before. It's a niche market, but they definitely have an audience. Some people just have eccentric tastes. It's totally normal."
"Yeah, exactly," Mia nodded eagerly, while internally letting out a massive sigh of relief. Thank God Suzie bought it.
