Neo moved like a blur, barely visible as he jumped from vampire to vampire, ending all of their lives before they could even speak. They looked surprised in death.

My heart pounded hard. Gods, I hadn’t even thought to move. I was still down on the sidewalk on my butt, watching the scene.

Slowly, he walked back to me, rubbing his hands on his pants as he came closer, like he didn’t want to touch me after touching something else so lowly.

When he reached me, he bent down and helped me up, steadying me on my feet.

“Are you alright?” he asked me.

“I think so, but… We have to get out of here. Those vampires are hunting me. I shouldn’t be out in the open.”

He nodded. “You know this place. Give me a direction and I will take us there.”

“Right now, I just need a phone,” I said. “I remember there being a payphone near the park.”

“Which way?”

“That way,” I said and pointed away from the orphanage.

Neo stepped closer, like he intended to scoop me into his arms.

“No,” I said. “That would draw too much attention from the humans and vampires both. Just take my hand, and let’s hurry.”

He did, clutching my hand tightly as we crossed the street. I was relieved when the corpses were gone from view, but I knew they were still there. That other vampires were out here somewhere, hunting me.

I was on edge, my adrenaline surging, looking all around us. I trusted Neo to handle things with his strength, but we could still be swarmed. We had to be careful.

When we reached the pay phone, my hand shook as I picked up the receiver. I didn’t have a quarter so I had to call collect. I felt ridiculous, wondering if she would even bother to accept the charges.

She did.

“Zora. Thank the Goddess. Valentin told me you had disappeared! Where are you? I’ll come get you at once.

Thirty minutes later, Neo and I were standing behind a cluster of trees, looking at the road, waiting for my mother’s limo to

appear.

As we came closer, I turned to introduce Neo, only to find that he was no longer behind me.

“Neo?” I called out, but there wasn’t any answer. Did he stay in the trees?

I started to go back, when my mother caught my arm. “What are you doing? We have to get out of here.”
