As he drove away, Max, Thorne, and Kairos stepped closer to me, offering their silent support.

I cared for them all so deeply. I thought I might even love them. They were each so special to me.

This affection filled me with both nervousness and determination. In the coming fight, I didn’t want to lose them. They wanted to protect me, and I knew they would give their lives to do so. I had to get stronger, to keep them from that sacrifice, as well as to be able to protect them in turn.

This desire to shield was not a one–way street. Just as they wanted to save me, I wanted to save them too.

“We should get back to training,” I said. “I want to be stronger.”

Thorne nodded.

“What about Neo?” Max asked.

Kairos huffed.

“He’s my mate,” I said with confidence. “He’ll be back.” He had to be.

Valentin wasn’t here to control the dummies with his magick, but we had other methods of training through practicing scenarios where each of my mates took a turn trying to attack me while another was on guard.

Each of my mates fought fiercely, both as a pretend vampire and as my protector. So far, I had remained thoroughly protected.

Currently, Kairos was defending me from Thorne. Already Kairos had blocked me from two different attempts by Thorne to sneak around him and grab me. On the third, Neo appeared. Shoving Thorne from behind, he knocked him down to the ground before swooping forward to take his place against Kairos.

Kairos’s growl grew louder.

“Neo!” I called, my heart filling, seeing him again.

Kairos lunged at Neo in anger, but Neo was deadly calm. He sidestepped Kairos, using his own momentum against him. Then Neo shoved off from Kairos’s back, rushed toward me and scooped me up into his arms.

“Got you,” he said, offering a small smile just for me on his otherwise steely face.

“Neo, please don’t antagonize them,” I said. Yes, I enjoyed the feeling of being in Neo’s arms, pressed up against his chest, but
