Chapter 144 The Lamb and the Liar

Maya waved it off. “He looks just like me, so obviously his personality’s gonna be like mine too.”

Early on, Lawrence had been a sweet, naive little thing. Soft-tempered. Never got mad. The easiest target in the world.

“You? Good personality?” Toby actually laughed. A genuine, unprecedented laugh.

All those times Maya had pinned him down and pummeled him, and here she was claiming she had a nice temperament. Unbelievable.

“What’s so funny?”

She stepped forward, ready to punch him in the stomach, but thought better of it and pulled back. She gave him a light tap instead.

“Mom loves girls, right? So I’ll just put him in my clothes.” Maya’s eyes lit up. “That way, Mom gets a classy daughter!”

It was perfect.

Toby was pretty. No one could deny that. But his kind of pretty was sharp and boyish, edged with something almost dangerously striking. He’d look ridiculous in girls’ clothes.

And his family would never have allowed it anyway.

But Lawrence? Fair game.

When they were small, she and Lawrence used to swap outfits all the time. Most people couldn’t tell them apart.

Toby’s eyes widened.

This entire line of conversation was a little too out there for someone raised the way he’d been. He shut it down without hesitation. “Absolutely not.”

Maya couldn’t have cared less about his opinion. She was just giving him advance notice. “I’ll talk to Mom about it.”

She wasn’t asking for his permission. Expecting him to go soft? She’d have better luck with Wendy. Wendy was the only one in this house who actually made decisions.

With that, Maya shoved him out of the room without a shred of remorse. Alfred got tossed out too. The door shut behind them.

Toby stood in the hallway, staring at the closed door. Alfred stood beside him, staring at the same door.

Silence.

“That’s rough,” Alfred said quietly.

It was unclear whether he meant himself or Toby.

The door was shut. Maya leaned against it and took a deep breath. The room was quiet. Nothing but the warm glow of the wall lamp, falling over the small figure standing with his head down.

She watched him.

Lawrence’s brain seemed to rust over. He couldn’t make it turn. After a long pause, words came out broken, like he was assembling each sentence by hand. “That not seeing each other was better for both of us.”

He’d never imagined she had memories too.

And suddenly, every strange thing, every piece that hadn’t fit, clicked into place. Lawrence stared at her. stunned.

Maya could see his fingertips shaking.

“Then… in your last life,” he said softly, his voice dry and cracking, barely recognizable. “Were you okay?”

Maya caught the fear in him. He was terrified of her answer. She froze for a second, then understood.

She opened her mouth and, instinctively, reached for comfort. “Of course. I was fine.”

He looked at her. His lips curved into the faintest, gentlest smile.

“That’s really good to hear.” His voice was soft. Quiet. Sweet as a lamb.

Liar, he thought.

He knew her better than anyone alive.

Maya knew her own words sounded hollow too.
