Off to the side, Raymond couldn’t be bothered to call him out. His gaze rested on him for a moment before he said, almost with a soft sigh, “You’ve grown up, Edric.”
Edric only nodded and gave a single response. “Mm.”
Raymond actually wanted to put on a proper show of fatherly love too, but this son had been soft–natured as a kid and was now even more resistant to any approach.
When he was little, there’d at least been a few openings to tease him, but as he grew up, he only listened with that bland, unruffled look, never giving away a single emotion.
“Edric, what made you suddenly want to come home?”
On the other side, George reached out with a grin and yanked over the bedsheet Wendy had just folded neatly, then, without so much as a word, started wrapping it around Maya’s head, his movements brisk, like he wanted to hide her away completely under wraps.
Just seeing Edric left Maya feeling all bottled up.
After all, too little time had passed.
From her point of view, three days ago she’d still been going through life and death alongside Onyx, and then the second she turned around, the crybaby Onyx had vanished, replaced by this cold, aloof grown–up Edric.
She stared dead–on at the tall, straight–backed young man in front of her, her gaze stuck on him and refusing to let go.
In the instant her eyes abruptly met his, her whole body froze on the spot, her breath even hitching half a beat.
Right then, the soft sheet came dropping down hard, cutting off her view and everything around her.
Only then did Maya snap back to herself.
“Quit messing with me, George. My hair’s all messed up now.”
That was the symmetrical double bun Alfred had just done for her, ruined just like that.
George kept on stubbornly wrapping the sheet around her head.

The boy coaxed her patiently, “I’ll redo it for you in a bit.”
Maya said, “Yours always comes out ugly.”

“I promise it won’t look bad, please.” George softened his voice and put on a wheedling act.
Only then did Maya grudgingly stop struggling.
Edric sat off to the side, watching these two little ones tussling in a heap, and found it a touch funny.
Aside from burying her head in the sand, what special purpose did covering her up even serve?
As childish as ever.
George had always been the most boyish of the kids, his feelings plain on his face, yet forever eager to hide whatever he treasured, unwilling to share even a sliver of it.
And now it was the same with Maya.
George wrapped Maya into a round little cocoon, bundled up tight, before finally setting his mind at ease.
In his eyes, Edric suddenly showing up at the door absolutely couldn’t be some scene of warm, tender feelings.
The man was either out for revenge or looking to pick a fight, and either way it was bound to be no good.
But think as he might, no one in the family had provoked Edric lately.
It couldn’t possibly be that Edric had suddenly gotten lonely and wanted to come home for New Year’s.
Even George not buying it, and Wendy and Raymond probably wouldn’t believe a single word of it either.
Edric raised a hand, his posture perfectly polite and accommodating as he smiled. “Whatever you were all talking about just now, go right ahead, don’t mind me.”
Maya thrashed around clumsily inside the sheet and finally poked her head out, a few wispy strands of hair plastered messily against her cheek.
“I almost forgot the main thing.” Wendy folded her hands on her knees and looked at Maya. “Maya, could you tell me the story one more time, the one about how you took out three people all on your own?”

Maya was speechless.
“Well, that was obviously because my luck was good.”
She tried to play it cute and act adorable.
Then her gaze shifted.
She noticed that the suspicious look on Raymond beside her was practically spilling over.
What Maya feared most was her father fixing her with that probing stare, like every little scheme in her head could be seen straight through.

The girl suddenly lunged at him, rubbing both hands all over her father’s face and playing the brat. “Stop looking at me! Stop analyzing me! I’m not listening, I’m not listening!”
Raymond was helpless. He reached out and gently peeled off the surprisingly strong little girl, throwing both hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay, okay, I won’t look.”
Raymond could always piece things together pretty much spot–on from the faintest clues, which was honestly ridiculous.
The best way to deal with him was to shut him up directly.
