This Time, Be the Villain’s Favorite Daughter

Chapter 415 A Steep Price

He held up two fingers.

Finished

“Two: there’s not a mark on you. A killer of Snowfinch’s caliber, even wounded and on the verge of death, would still have enough strength to take someone down with him–yet you don’t have a single injury.”

Maya’s hand unconsciously fisted in the fabric over her knee.

He raised a third finger.

“Three: Snowfinch vanished without a trace for over a dozen years, with no public combat record of any kind. He was in the shadows, you were in the open; there’s no way you could have learned his moves, his habits, his weak points through any ordinary channel.

“And yet you clearly knew them well.

“You didn’t just know his file-it was more like you knew his habits.”

Edric paused. “There are only two kinds of people in this world who could know Snowfinch’s habits that well. One is someone who’d fought him countless times and survived. The other is-”

The other is someone who died many times over, who probed him countless times.

So which kind is Maya?

“You repeated it many times, didn’t you?” His tone hadn’t shifted in the slightest-it was almost gentle,

even.

Trapped beneath his suffocating gaze, Maya unconsciously clenched her hands into tight fists. She managed a small smile, feigning total nonchalance, and instinctively reverted to her childhood name for him, desperate to steer the conversation away.

“Onyx, you’re so smart.”

Edric was unmoved by her attempt to crack a joke and deflect.

He watched the strained expression on Maya’s face, and raw anguish surfaced in his eyes, so stark it was almost painful to look at.

Maya couldn’t stand being looked at like that.

She sprang up, reached out to scrub his expression away, and grumbled, “Don’t look at me like that

“It’s not like I had it thai rough, really.

“Cheer up.” Maya tried to force the corners of his mouth upward. “Whether you’re happy or not, the point is. getting to see Alfred again makes me happy.”

Back when she’d first reloaded, the joy of being able to see Alfred again had been enough to drown out every last fear of death.

Chapter 416 A-Steep Price

Honestly.

Back then, she hadn’t even possessed the energy to complain.

Finishea

Before the crushing weight of fate, people were nothing more than pawns pushed across a board-helpless to resist, no matter how desperately they wished otherwise.

Yet, looking back at her second chance, Maya realized with a sense of absurd irony that she was actually grateful.

Grateful that she could still stand here. Grateful that she could still look at him.

“You know,” Maya rambled, her tone light as she tried to disperse the heavy air between them, “if you treat this world like a story, everyone knows the villains never get a happy ending.

“And even if one somehow stumbles into a good resolution, it never comes cheap-there’s always a steep price to pay.”

In her mind, anyone—even herself-could die a hundred times over, and it still wouldn’t balance the scales.

If you choose to pick up the executioner’s blade, you had better make peace with facing the block yourself.

She didn’t feel cheated by fate, nor did she think life had dealt her an unfair hand.

Just being allowed to see them again felt like a blessing she didn’t deserve.

“Anyway, let’s drop it.” Maya offered a faint, almost signing smile, lowering her voice. “There’s no point talking about it out loud.”

It would only burden others with unnecessary worry.

Her words confirmed Edric’s darkest suspicions. A copper tang of blood flooded his mouth as he bit through the tip of his tongue, using the sharp physical pain to anchor the tempest of emotion surging

within him.

All his life, Edric had cursed fate. Yet fate had shown him an impossible mercy by letting him meet Maya twice.

Was her ability to rewind time a gift from the heavens, or a cruel punishment?

It was impossible to tell.

Maya genuinely didn’t view herself as a martyr. To her, running the same dungeon loop over and over simply made a person numb. Wanting to lift his spirits, she tried for a lighter mood. “How about 1 carve you a little bunny apple?”
