The officer’s words struck her like a bolt of lightning.
For a moment, Celestine didn't know which piece of news to process first.
Chester was awake?
He let the driver go?
Celestine asked coldly, “Why wasn’t I notified?”
“Miss Selwyn, your husband’s lawyer has been handling all communication with us. Based on the evidence from the scene, the crash was indeed an accident—at least regarding the truck driver’s part. They chose a private settlement, and the compensation should be transferred in the next day or two,” the officer explained patiently.
Celestine’s feelings were a complicated mess. “Then has there been any progress on my parents’ case from years ago?”
“Because that case is quite old, we’ve merged the reports and assigned people to it. We will notify you as soon as we have any results.”
Celestine left the police station in a daze.
No progress.
The driver was released.
Chester was awake.
All of these things gave Celestine a pounding headache.
She took out her phone and found the number she had blocked long ago.
The first call didn’t connect.
On the second try, an impatient man’s voice came through.
“Who is this?”
Celestine took a deep breath.
“Chester, since you’re awake, let’s finalize the divorce proceedings as soon as possible. I don’t want to be entangled with you anymore. Also, send someone to pick up your son.”
“Who is this?”
Chester stared at the unsaved contact, momentarily confused.
This person definitely wasn’t calling him for the first time with this nonsense.
