"Is that so?" Jade arched a brow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. She wasn't buying a word of it. "And he just happened to sit with you, completely ignoring the rest of the staff?"
Willow avoided her gaze. "Like I said, we just bumped into each other."
"Who paid the bill?" Jade demanded, unwilling to let a single detail slip by.
"I did," Willow replied. It was true—Silas's exclusive black card hadn't worked at the basic cafeteria scanners.
"Really?" Jade's suspicions deflated slightly. If a guy was genuinely pursuing a woman, there was no way he would let her cover the check.
"I told you, it's nothing," Willow said, taking the opportunity to lecture her friend. "I'm at Merit Biotech to work. I don't have the time or energy for office romances. Besides, if you're going to ship me with someone, pick a realistic target. Look at who he is. Men like him don't fall for women like me."
Jade hated hearing that. "What's wrong with women like you? You're gorgeous, sweet, and brilliant at your job. Stop selling yourself short. Your past doesn't define your worth. You need to recognize your value and start playing to your strengths."
Willow had heard this pep talk at least a dozen times, but it wasn't about low self-esteem. She knew she had grown, but Silas Thorne was simply in a completely different stratosphere. He was untouchable.
"I know, I know. Just eat your food before it gets cold," Willow deflected.
But Jade wasn't ready to let it go. "I'm telling you, he's definitely interested. At the absolute minimum, he likes having you around. Otherwise, why would a guy in his position choose to eat with you out of hundreds of employees?"
