"It was fine."
"What do you mean, fine?" Vanessa's voice went up an octave. "Did you half-ass the gift? I've told you a million times, our connection to the Sinclair family is our lifeline! If you don't secure it—"
"I get it." Lucas was entirely out of patience for this lecture.
But Vanessa refused to drop it. "Was Vivienne there? Did you talk to her? She's still single, you know. You still have a chance."
Lucas had hit his absolute limit. He pinched the bridge of his nose in exhaustion. "Mom, can you please stop trying to play matchmaker? How many times do I have to tell you? She is with Julian, and they are incredibly happy together. I literally look at her like a sister. Give it a rest!"
Vanessa muttered under her breath, "But Julian is married."
"Even if he's married, he's with Vivienne. He only got married in the first place for her sake. Can you just stay out of this? You don't understand how their world works. Let me say this one last time: I only see her as a sister."
"Fine, fine," Vanessa conceded, finally backing off. "A sister is better than nothing."
"Go take a shower, and I'll have some hangover soup ready for you when you get out," she urged.
Lucas started to walk away, but stopped halfway down the hall. He turned back to look at her. "Mom, if I remember correctly, Daisy had amber eyes, right?"
Daisy was his sister's childhood nickname. He had been so young when she disappeared that he only remembered the nickname.
Vanessa froze. A flash of profound discomfort crossed her face. "Why are you suddenly bringing this up?"
