With Leo Yardley present, Silas Thorne couldn't say much to Willow Horgan. Before leaving, he simply told her not to worry about heading out for lunch, as he would handle the arrangements.
After Silas left, Leo looked perplexed by the brief exchange. "Are the perks at Merit Biotech always this good? The CEO personally arranges your lunch?"
Willow wasn't in the mood to explain the complicated truth, and frankly, she didn't know how. She deflected with a quick excuse. "It's probably just a welcome gesture since you just joined."
"Really?" Leo chuckled in disbelief. Did Mr. Thorne really like him that much? He hadn't gotten that impression at all.
A second later, he realized something. "Wait a minute. When Mr. Thorne was speaking earlier, he was looking right at you. He didn't say a word to me."
"It doesn't matter who he looked at; the point was to welcome you," Willow insisted, eager to shut down his suspicions. "He clearly values you. Otherwise, he wouldn't have offered you such an incredible compensation package."
"That's true." Thinking about the astronomical salary Silas had offered—multiples above the market rate—made Leo feel a bit more confident. "If Mr. Thorne values me that much, I'll just have to work twice as hard to repay his faith in me."
When lunchtime rolled around, the delivery arrived. It wasn't standard takeout. Silas had ordered from New York City's most exclusive restaurant, a place that strictly offered dine-in service and famously never delivered. Getting a table there required months of waiting, leaving them to wonder just how Silas had managed to get the chef to agree to private catering.
Because Willow had convinced Leo this was all for him, he was sitting right there when the food arrived. Seeing the extravagant setup, Leo was utterly stunned. "Isn't this a bit too high-end?"
