"Hmph," Mr. Smith scoffed coldly. "Who else? Whoever took him in and offered him a new position is undeniably complicit in this sabotage."
Vivienne tapped her chin, pretending to recall the details. "I heard he went to Merit Biotech. And the executive who orchestrated the whole thing is one of their VPs. A woman named Willow Horgan."
Mr. Smith was familiar with Merit Biotech. Rumor had it their financial backing was bottomless, controlling hundreds of billions in capital across various cutting-edge industries. In recent years, they had aggressively muscled their way into the gene-editing sector, using unlimited funding and poached top-tier talent to shatter the industry's established hierarchy in just a few short years.
But Mr. Smith couldn't care less about their wealth. "So what if it's Merit? The pursuit of gene editing isn't a highway you can pave overnight. It's an agonizingly long journey, full of thorns and unknowns. It requires patience and the resilience to survive endless trial and error. But them? They have zero respect for the field. They just steal the fruits of others' labor. People with such blatant disregard for professional integrity won't last long in this industry. And I, for one, will never recognize any research they produce."
Hearing this, Vivienne finally allowed herself a satisfied smile. She quickly smoothed her features into an expression of gentle understanding. "Professor, please don't let this upset you. People like that simply aren't worth your anger. Since you're based in New York City right now, it's inevitable that you might cross paths with them at upcoming industry events. When that happens, we just need to stand by our principles and hold our heads high."
"I'd prefer not to run into them at all. I won't give them the time of day," Mr. Smith said bluntly. As an academic, his view of the world was strictly black and white.
"Don't worry. We invited you here to focus on our joint research. I will do everything in my power to keep them away from you," Vivienne promised. But internally, her mind was already racing, plotting her next move. She couldn't wait to orchestrate a 'chance encounter' between Mr. Smith and Willow at the next event.
First, she wanted Willow and her team to see exactly what kind of power Vivienne wielded. So what if Leo left? She had immediately secured someone vastly superior.
