When Vivienne returned from getting her rabies shot and realized Willow was staying there too, her face darkened into an ugly scowl.
She gritted her teeth, cursing inwardly. What a desperate bitch. No matter the situation or the stakes, Willow always showed up to fight her for it. As if a nobody like her even deserved to be in the same arena.
Spiteful, Vivienne immediately pivoted to Mr. Smith, tearing into Willow with a fresh barrage of insults. But Mr. Smith's entire focus was on the case study; he had absolutely zero patience for her petty drama.
Instead, he cut her off. "When can we actually start the interviews and data collection?"
Recalling the disasters of the past two days, Vivienne played it smart this time. Instead of boasting that it would happen "immediately," she hesitated. "I need to discuss the timeline with the mayor."
Mr. Smith frowned, clearly displeased. "Didn't you tell me this morning that everything was arranged? You said we could start the interviews the second we got into the mountains."
Yes, she had said exactly that. But back then, she had no idea the family would be so stubbornly ungrateful, rejecting her cash and unleashing a rabid dog on them.
The mere memory made her blood boil, but she couldn't let Mr. Smith see that. So, she lied smoothly. "Yes, I did say that, but on our way up, we were suddenly ambushed by stray dogs. Look, my wounds are still throbbing."
She pointedly showed him her bandaged arm, hoping to scare him off for a bit. "This isn't New York. The locals are uneducated, and the environment is volatile. To ensure your team's safety, I strongly recommend we wait. Once the mayor gives the green light, we'll go in. It won't be too late."
Seeing this, Mr. Smith hesitated. It wasn't that he was afraid, but he had to consider his team. These professionals had flown across the world with him. Many were middle-aged with families to support. He couldn't afford to be reckless.
"How many days?" he asked, backing down.
