He actually found the quiet, huddled flock of chickens somewhat endearing. Buster, the stray dog napping by the door, looked docile and sweet. Even the faint grunts drifting from the distant pigpen felt like a charming slice of rustic life.
In just one night, his entire perspective had completely flipped.
Silas strolled leisurely through the yard, his features relaxed and at ease. Suddenly, a voice called out from behind him. "Mr. Thorne?"
He turned to see Arthur Vance and gave a brief nod.
Arthur was completely taken aback to run into his boss at this hour, especially wandering around a dirt yard. He clearly remembered Silas taking one look at the place upon arrival and scowling as if he wanted to burn it down. Where did this sudden leisurely mood come from?
He looked at him in shock. "Why are you up so early? The sun isn't even fully up yet."
Silas felt a brief flash of awkwardness at being caught, so he quickly threw out a casual excuse. "Getting a workout in."
Arthur nodded in understanding. He knew Silas maintained a strict fitness regimen. Being stranded in the backwoods without proper gym equipment meant walking was the only option left.
He decided not to intrude further. "Well, I'll leave you to it. Have a good morning."
"Right," Silas replied, stepping out of the small courtyard.
It was true what they said—when you're in a good mood, the whole world looks beautiful. He even found the wild weeds growing by the dirt road possessing a unique, rugged charm, so he stopped to pick a few small flowers.
Guessing Willow would be waking up soon, Silas finally headed back.
Carrying a tray of breakfast and the freshly picked wildflowers, he knocked on Willow's door. "Are you awake?"
A bright, clear voice immediately answered from inside.
Silas pushed the door open and walked in. "Wash up, then come eat."
