Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 388

"Lawrence... could you—"

Before Jackson could ask if he might delay his flight, a lovely female voice filtered through the line.

"Oh, shoot. Lawrence, you left your thermos in the lounge."

"Go ahead and board," Lawrence immediately replied. "I'll go back and grab it."

Still keeping the phone to his ear, he added, "Jackson?"

Whatever Jackson had been about to say died in his throat, completely choked off by the effortless, peaceful warmth flowing between Lawrence and Bonnie.

"No, it's nothing," Jackson forced out, his voice hoarse. "Jasper just saw the puppy at your parents' house yesterday and has been throwing a fit wanting one. I just wanted to ask where you bought it."

Lawrence chuckled. "Bonnie found her as a stray. If Jasper wants a dog, you can look into adopting one."

Jackson muttered a hasty reply and hung up.

When Lawrence jogged back with his thermos, he saw Bonnie standing at the bottom of the boarding stairs. She hadn't boarded without him.

He found himself picking up his pace, drawn toward her.

Bonnie tilted her head and smiled at him. Naturally intertwining his fingers with hers, he casually offered the truth. "That was Jackson. He said he was calling to ask where we got June, but I have a feeling it's actually about Hannah being sick."

He quickly filled her in on Jackson's unexpected visit to his parents' house the day before.

"She saw me, turned to leave, but then came back. Deep down, she didn't want to die. She wanted to live. But to spare us from the guilt, and because she couldn't bear the thought of living with severe burn scars, she left a note claiming she had always planned to commit suicide."

Meeting Bonnie's clear, bright eyes, he spoke with absolute conviction. "Candie, I truly owed Jeniffer my life. But three years ago, I paid that debt in full. I saved Jasper. I like to think that if Jeniffer were looking down from heaven, she wouldn't want her own flesh and blood to be born from a mistake, only to be erased because of adult grudges. So I saved him. And now, I owe them nothing."

He placed her hand flat against his chest, right over his heart, letting her feel the steady, vigorous rhythm beating within.

"I won't visit a stranger in the hospital. Moving forward, my girlfriend, my wife, my children—none of them will ever interact with a stranger, and our lives will never be disturbed by one."

Bonnie understood exactly what he meant, and she read the unwavering honesty in his eyes. A soft, brilliant smile blossomed on her face. "Okay. That's good."

Her smile sent an instinctive jolt through his chest. Acting purely on impulse, Lawrence leaned in to kiss her, but Bonnie shot him a warning glare. Pulling her hand free, she spun around and marched up the boarding stairs.
