Zoey was completely oblivious to the drama that had just unfolded. She found Bonnie tucked away in a quiet corner of the bookstore. Bonnie was holding a novel, but her mind was miles away.
She stole a glance through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but Lawrence was already gone.
He must have left.
She had rushed inside earlier simply because she didn't want Zoey to see him. If Zoey asked why Lawrence was standing out there, Bonnie would have had to explain the whole middle school nightmare.
It was just too exhausting.
Bonnie withdrew her gaze, slid the book back onto the shelf, and focused on helping Zoey pick out their reading material for the day.
Zoey was in high spirits. She picked out several books, and the two of them grabbed iced lattes before settling into the plush sofas in the lounge area, chatting as they flipped through the pages.
Neither of them was particularly extroverted, but they shared a deep love for reading, which gave them plenty to talk about. The hours slipped by effortlessly.
When Zoey suggested they grab dinner in the city and maybe do some more window shopping, Bonnie hesitated. A part of her really wanted to say yes.
It had been so long since she had felt this relaxed.
She had assumed the summer after middle school would be a break, but Shirley had relentlessly warned her about the cutthroat academics of high school. Shirley insisted that if she slacked off now, she would walk into her freshman classes only to find everyone else had already mastered the curriculum.
Because of that, Bonnie had spent almost her entire summer trapped in advanced prep courses.
When she didn't score first place in their recent monthly exams, Shirley immediately blamed it on a lack of effort during those summer months.
But Bonnie felt suffocated. It was so rare for her to get out of the house, and having just run into those two miserable bullies, she really just wanted a night to decompress.
After a moment of thought, Bonnie told Zoey, "Let me call my parents."
Zoey nodded, encouraging her to go ahead.
Bonnie took her phone and stepped out of the bookstore. She stood by the glass railing overlooking the atrium and dialed her dad, Bachelor, first.
