In the weeks following her birthday, their relationship deepened, but their time together grew scarce. Both were swamped with finals, leaving zero room for dates.
As exam week rolled in, Bonnie spent most of her days studying with Helen in the library or dorm. Her only time with Lawrence was a brief evening walk to clear their heads.
After their final exam, there were still a few days left until winter break officially began, but classes were over. Students who lived far away, like Bonnie's two other roommates, had already booked early tickets home.
Oddly, Helen was in no rush to leave. She stayed holed up in the dorm. Usually vibrant and outgoing, she had become utterly listless. One night, Bonnie even heard her crying.
When asked, she just insisted she was fine.
Bonnie couldn't take it anymore. Worried sick about her friend, she listened to the muffled sobs coming from the bunk above. Shutting her book, she climbed up the ladder and softly called Helen's name through the privacy curtain.
The crying hitched. "What is it?" Helen rasped.
"Helen, can I come in? I just want to talk."
After a long pause, the curtain slid back. Seeing her friend's swollen eyes, Bonnie's heart ached. She crawled into the bed and asked gently, "Did something happen at home? Or did you have a fight with Ned?"
"Neither," Helen wailed, bursting into fresh tears. "That bastard Ned wants to break up with me!"
Bonnie nearly jumped right off the mattress in shock. Ned was absolutely obsessed with Helen. How could he ever be the one to end things?
