To be honest, walking in and seeing that scene had crushed him. Lawrence would never claim to be the perfect boyfriend, but when it came to other women, he gave Bonnie absolute security. Plenty of girls threw themselves at him, but he never gave them the time of day. He cut them off immediately because he knew Bonnie could be sensitive and insecure. He expected her to do the same—to freeze Preston out and tell him to get lost. Barely keeping a lid on his temper, Lawrence kept his voice dangerously low. "Candie, you say you barely spoke to him, but I stood there watching you for a while. You weren't just talking. You were smiling at him. He even reached over and pointed at your sketchbook." Bonnie blinked, genuinely not remembering that happening. When she was in the zone drawing, her responses were purely on autopilot. She hadn't thought twice about it. But she had never seen Lawrence look at her with such harsh hostility. They hadn't seen each other in days, and the very first thing he did was interrogate her. Even her trying to be sweet wasn't working. Her guilt quickly evaporated, replaced by a sharp sting of resentment. She felt he was being completely irrational. Her own expression hardened. "Are you seriously going to be this petty? I couldn't just publicly humiliate my TA in front of all my friends. I thought we trusted each other enough not to need to explain stupid things like this. You don't have to look at me like I committed a crime." Lawrence pinched the bridge of his nose, forcing his tone to level out. "I'm not looking at you like that. Candie, just think about it for a second. If there was a girl constantly throwing herself at me and you caught us sitting shoulder-to-shoulder laughing, you would have torn the place apart. I'm just venting my frustration. Am I not even allowed to do that?" Used to getting her way with him, Bonnie refused to see his side of it. "No! You don't get to show up and immediately start yelling at me. If you're going to act like this, you shouldn't have even come!" Lawrence inhaled sharply. "Bonnie, I pulled two all-nighters and traveled all day to get here. I didn't come to fight with you. Just say something nice and stop being stubborn." "I tried being nice the second we walked in, but you didn't want to hear it!" Bonnie fired back, her temper flaring. "You're being ridiculous! How many times have we had this exact same argument? Every time you complain, I patiently reassure you, and now you just think you can walk all over me!" Lawrence let out a humorless, incredulous laugh. Who was walking over whom in this relationship? He showed one ounce of genuine displeasure, and she was already treating him like the villain. "The bottom line is you were wrong this time. You know exactly what his intentions are, yet you still entertained him. If I hadn't showed up, would you two have gone out to dinner together? Hung out all night?" Bonnie hated arguing. Frustrated and overwhelmed, she shoved him hard in the chest. "Why are you being like this? You just want to pick a fight. If I knew you were going to be like this, I would've told you not to come. You're ruining everything!" "So me coming to see you was a mistake?" Lawrence demanded, his brow furrowing deeply. "I didn't beg you to come. If you don't want to be here, leave." The moment the words left her mouth, Lawrence let out a dark, breathless chuckle. He was hopelessly in love with her—too furious to let it go, but too completely devoted to actually scream at her. He stared at her, a muscle feathering along his jaw. Suddenly, he moved, wrapping his arms around her waist, crushing her against his chest, and leaning down to silence her with a punishing kiss. "Get away from me—" Bonnie only managed to get the words out before he tackled her back onto the mattress. The second their lips met, the sheer force of how much they had missed each other exploded. Lawrence didn't want to fight anymore; he just wanted to bury himself in her. But Bonnie was still blazing mad. She kicked, thrashed, and pushed at his shoulders, refusing to let him kiss or hold her. Terrified of accidentally hurting her in the scuffle, Lawrence tried to dodge her frantic movements. In the chaotic tangle of limbs, Bonnie's hand flew up, striking Lawrence squarely across the face.
