Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 53

“My parents weren’t on board. They thought my ex’s family background wasn’t ideal and believed everything they’d done for me was supposed to help me move up in life, not take steps back. We didn’t split because of anything major, but those little things never went away. They just kept piling up over four years, wearing me down. Honestly, you might laugh, but when it was finally over, I felt such a relief.”

The real issue between him and his ex wasn’t anything dramatic. It was just endless bickering over the smallest stuff. They’d make up in no time, but the old arguments never truly went away.

Felton got this far-off look. “But when she comes to me now, I can’t help myself. If she’s not doing well, I feel bad. I wasted four years of her life and didn’t give her anything in the end. I don’t know, maybe it’s guilt, but whenever I see her cry it’s like my heart can’t take it.”

Bonnie listened, and for some reason it felt like something sharp jabbed at her chest. Guilt. Feeling like you owe someone. Is this just how guys are? Even after a breakup, when the relief hits and the love’s already faded, do they still turn soft for their exes just because they feel sorry for them?

Bonnie brushed the thought away. Her life was good now. She didn’t need anyone’s pity. She spoke with a faint smile. “Don’t worry about Helen being upset. We were just on a blind date, that’s all.”

Felton kind of expected her to say that. Bonnie always seemed quiet, never asked for much and acted easygoing, but if you looked closer, you’d see how sure of herself she actually was. There was no way she’d give him space to linger over some old emotional drama. Ending the date right now was the best thing for both of them.

Felton felt lighter somehow. Still, he looked apologetic. “Sorry for taking up your time these last couple days.”

Bonnie’s smile was gentle. “It goes both ways. No need to apologize.”

Only then did Felton finally reach for his milk tea. Drops of condensation slid down the sides of the cup. The chill cut through the hot, sticky air, and for a moment things felt a little calmer. He swallowed and frowned slightly. “Actually, you know what’s weird? My ex came to find me this time because she got a text from a stranger. Someone told her I was going on dates, said I was about to get married. She tried calling the number back, but nobody ever picked up…”
