Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 65

Bonnie took a long, hard look at his pale, drawn face, noticing how much weight he’d lost. She finally crossed the room and sat across from him.

“Lawrence.”

He didn’t answer right away. His breath came out in rough, uneven bursts.

“So, what is it you’re really trying to do?” Bonnie asked.

Lawrence knew his little plan wasn’t clever. Honestly, it was nearly laughable, flimsy enough to fall apart at the first touch.

All he wanted was for Bonnie, who was still so young and not in any rush to settle down, to go on a few bad dates. Maybe after running into a couple of guys with issues, she’d eventually get tired of it and stop trying altogether. If she wasn’t meeting new people, wasn’t going on dates, then for now at least, Lawrence could finally relax.

Except Bonnie was always too smart for him.

How did she know?

Watching him dodge her gaze, seeing that haunted, guilty look on his face, a spark of anger flared up inside Bonnie. She could barely remember the last time she’d seen Lawrence look so unsure of himself around her. He’d always played it cool, guilty or not.

She thought back to the time he’d left her waiting at a restaurant because Hannah had called in a panic after practice, thinking someone was following her. Lawrence came back later, clearly feeling bad, but still shameless enough to pull her in for a kiss and even grabbed her hand to smack his own face, pretending to be punished.

Or after they broke up, when he stared straight into her eyes and said all those harsh, unforgivable things.

Through it all, he’d always faced her, never looking away, no matter how bad things got.

Bonnie’s patience was paper-thin. She spelled it out for him, each word sharp and clear. “You sabotaged my first date too, didn’t you?”

“The second guy was still hung up on his ex. Anything nice he did for you was probably just leftover habits from his previous relationships. If you’d stuck it out, you’d end up fighting about her again and again.”

As for the others she met through that dating app... Lawrence didn’t even bother trying to explain.

Bonnie listened, then just let out this short, bitter laugh. “Wow, you really think you understand how men deal with guilt over their exes, huh?”

The irony wasn’t lost on her. Just like what he did with her—his own ex. Even after breaking up and moving on, married now with a kid, he still couldn’t let go. Still thought he had some sort of responsibility to watch over her, and thought he had the right to butt into her love life because he felt guilty.

Bonnie felt speechless. Her head buzzed as her anger burned hotter, making her ears ring. Across from her, Lawrence’s lips moved, cracked and pale, but she couldn’t make out a word he was saying.

Without even thinking, Bonnie grabbed a cup of tea from the table and hurled it right at his face—the face she thought she’d known so well, the one she’d loved and despised, missed and tried so hard to forget.
