Second, he was entirely used to Clara being there. He had no desire to adjust to someone new.
Settling on that logic, Julian lit another cigarette. His mind drifted to their anniversary dinner the day after tomorrow.
Right. Hadn't she dropped off a gift box for him a few days ago?
...
Upstairs.
Clara retreated to her bedroom and ran a hot bath. It finally eased the brutal tension she had been carrying all day.
Stepping out of the bathroom, she remembered Dominic and quickly dialed her assistant, Nora Quinn.
Nora answered on the first ring, her voice laced with panic. "Boss! Why haven't you been answering your messages or calls? Are you okay? That bitch Seraphina is entirely out of her mind!"
Clara smiled warmly at the fierce loyalty. She gave Nora a brief rundown of the situation before cutting to the chase.
"Nora, I'm taking an extended leave of absence. I won't be coming into the office for a while. I need you to take point on the Jarrett Global project."
After everything that had gone down, she would have to be completely devoid of self-respect to keep slaving away for Julian's company.
She was never stepping foot in that building again.
Nora agreed immediately, then remembered a piece of gossip. "Did Mr. Lowell actually approve your leave? You missed the chaos yesterday. He was absolutely raging! He tore the legal department to shreds, and he flat-out fired Lester Lawrence."
Clara froze. "Wait, what? Lester got fired? Why?"
Nora gossiped, "I don't know the exact details, but rumor has it he 'failed to follow instructions'..."
...
After hanging up.
Clara was left with a complicated swirl of emotions.
Why would Julian fire his top attorney?
Hadn't he sent Lester specifically to strong-arm her into signing that ridiculous contract the other night?
As she pondered this.
A news alert suddenly flashed on her screen:
[BREAKING: Lowell Industries Lead Designer Seraphina Shaw Cleared of All Allegations! Evidence proves it was a malicious setup!]
Clara read the headline with a deadpan expression, all warmth draining from her system.
Just as she suspected. Julian hadn't fired his lawyer to avenge her. His ultimate priority, as always, was shielding Seraphina.
A bitter smirk twisted her lips as she tossed her phone onto the bed. She sat down at her desk, trying to sketch, but she couldn't focus. Her fingers remained stiff and uncooperative.
