After Julian left, Clara remained utterly broken on the sofa, not moving an inch.
It wasn't that she didn't want to move; her body was in complete agony. It felt as though she had been run over by a truck. Every slight shift sent shockwaves of pain through her muscles.
Clara wept silently, her trembling fingers gripping the blanket so tightly her knuckles turned white.
She swore to carve this excruciating pain into her memory!
That night, snowflakes drifted past the window, instantly melting into freezing puddles as they hit the ground, as tragic and desolate as a lover's tears.
...
The next morning.
Susan was cleaning upstairs when she finally found Clara.
Clara was flushed with an unnatural, feverish red, looking incredibly pitiful.
Susan let out a gasp, instantly dropping her cleaning cloth. She rushed to the sofa and pressed the back of her hand against Clara's forehead.
She was burning up. She needed a hospital immediately.
"Clara, Clara... wake up. You have a terrible fever. I'm taking you to the hospital."
Clara groggily fluttered her eyes open, her throat so raw and agonizing she couldn't even speak.
"What is wrong with Julian? Didn't he notice you were sick when he came back last night? How could he leave you sleeping in the study?"
Susan grumbled as she carefully helped Clara sit up.
The small blanket slipped down...
Seeing the bruises covering Clara's skin,
Susan's face drained of color as the horrifying reality set in.
"Oh my god, this..."
Susan's lips trembled as she looked at Clara with overwhelming sympathy.
Clara merely closed her eyes in bleak despair, her throat bobbing as she swallowed the crushing humiliation...
Tears pricked Susan's eyes. Furious at the injustice, she supported Clara with one arm and pulled out her phone with the other to call Julian.
Did he have any idea what he had done to this poor girl?
Did that man even have a heart?
...
But after ringing for a few seconds, the call was abruptly disconnected.
Susan's chest tightened in disbelief.
She dialed again.
Clara watched the entire scene unfold, her heart turning to absolute ice. She reached out and grabbed Susan's wrist, stopping her. "Susan, don't bother. Julian is with Seraphina Shaw..."
She had heard him take the call last night.
Susan froze, literally speechless with rage. He had abused his girlfriend like this, only to run off and spend the night with another woman? Unbelievable!
"He's going to regret this!"
Susan spat furiously.
Clara managed a bitter, hollow smile.
Susan put her phone away, helped Clara wrap the blanket tightly around herself, and said gently, "I'm taking you to the hospital right now..."
