He couldn't stand seeing such an exceptional talent be ruthlessly crushed.
But reality was reality.
Neither of them had the power to change it!
Mr. Crawford sighed heavily, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and handing it to her. "Clara, the truth is, your concept was absolutely brilliant. I didn't choose you because of certain... unspoken reasons. You must never, ever doubt your own talent."
Clara's face turned deathly pale. She immediately guessed exactly what those 'unspoken reasons' were, and her grip on the handkerchief tightened violently.
She forced herself not to think about it!
If she didn't think about it, it wouldn't hurt so damn much!
But whether it was her escalating fever or the sheer emotional devastation, even when she tried to block it out, the agony was suffocating!
"Take care of yourself. Keep pursuing your designs. I have no doubt that one day, you will carve out an incredible path for yourself!"
After offering a few more words of comfort, Mr. Crawford turned and left to attend to his other executive duties.
Clara murmured a hollow thank-you. Once he was gone, she took the elevator down to the lobby.
In those short few minutes, a million thoughts raced through her mind.
She decided this was it!
She was done wasting her life in this toxic wasteland!
She was leaving. She was going to stay as far away from Julian and Seraphina as physically possible!
With that resolution, Clara pulled out her phone and booked a flight to Somerset for the very next day. She couldn't leave today; she still needed to make arrangements for her sister and her nephew.
However, the moment she stepped out of the elevator, she ran straight into the person stepping out of the opposite cab.
Seraphina.
She was practically glowing with smug satisfaction, laughing brightly as she bragged to Julian over the phone.
"Julian, thank you so much for helping me behind the scenes. I seriously don't know how I could ever repay you!"
The man's deep voice replied, "It was mostly your own talent."
Seraphina giggled coyly. "Julian, you always know exactly what to say..."
"I'm outside. Come out, I'm waiting for you."
"You came to pick me up? Give me one second, I'm heading out right now!"
"..."
To Clara, the words felt like a bomb detonating directly inside her skull. The pain was blinding.
All the composure she had fought so desperately to maintain instantly shattered into a million pieces!
Clara clenched her fists, staring dead ahead, her eyelashes fluttering... the corners of her eyes stained a violent, tragic red.
Hanging up the phone, Seraphina strutted out of the elevator and finally noticed Clara.
Seeing Clara looking so utterly defeated was both pathetic and hilarious.
And Seraphina absolutely loved it.
She flashed a venomous smirk, waving her phone in the air, deliberately twisting the knife deeper. "Well, Clara, you heard it yourself. Julian was pulling the strings for me the entire time!"
"So, you really should just—"
Before she could finish her gloating sentence,
Clara lunged forward and slapped her ruthlessly across the face.
The loud smack echoed like a gunshot through the massive lobby. Every single person in the vicinity turned to stare.
"Ah!"
