Night fell. Nova downed her herbal supplement. Her lower back ached from the sheer exhaustion of the day, and a heavy wave of drowsiness washed over her. Before going to sleep, she logged into her old work account for a quick check.
Tristan hadn't sent a single message.
He had likely escorted Yvette home. Since Yvette had suffered a grievance today, she naturally needed comforting.
And for consenting adults, the best comfort was always found in bed.
Nova didn't care anymore. She turned off her phone, closed her eyes, and drifted off.
Half asleep, she was jolted awake by a maid.
"Mr. Forrester is back. He wants a hot meal, specifically your pasta, and a hangover tonic. Bring it up to the study."
Nova hadn't expected Tristan to return at three in the morning.
She fell silent for a moment. Thinking of the "wifely duties" he had thrown in her face, the mounting debts of the Clarke family, and the ongoing lawsuits against her father and brother, she swallowed her exhaustion and got out of bed.
When she carried the tray of fresh pasta and the tonic into the study, Tristan was staring calmly at a stack of documents. His face was devoid of emotion, exuding a chilling aura that made her stomach drop.
Nova didn't say a word. As she approached to set the tray down, a faint scent of perfume drifted to her nose. She recognized it instantly—it was Yvette's.
Right then, the phone on the desk lit up.
A message from "Yvette": "You're so exhausting. I'm completely wiped out. I'm staying in bed all day tomorrow, don't you dare wake me up! Hmph! [Pouting emoji]"
Nova's mind went completely blank. Her body froze.
The banquet had ended at nine. Tristan had returned at three.
She was an adult. She knew exactly what had transpired during those five or six missing hours.
Unless he had been in incredibly close, prolonged physical contact with Yvette, her perfume wouldn't be clinging to him like this.
He had finished comforting Yvette, engaged in the most intimate acts imaginable, and then came home at the crack of dawn—only to have the maids wake his pregnant wife to cook for him.
Nova lowered her eyes, swallowing the bitter lump in her throat. As she turned to leave, the man's low, gravelly voice echoed behind her. "What exactly is your relationship with Professor Mathew?"
Nova's body stiffened.
"You schemed, drugged me, and climbed into my bed. Now that you realize you can't milk this for any more benefits, you want a divorce. Do you think the Forrester family is a revolving door? Or do you just think I have such a good temper that you can manipulate me however you please?"
He shoved her back. Nova stumbled several steps before regaining her balance.
She understood the venom in his words perfectly.
Because of that one accidental night, Tristan hated her. He wanted her to taste the bitter consequences of her actions.
An icy chill spread through Nova's veins. With red, tear-filled eyes, her voice trembled as she finally spoke. "Mr. Forrester, I used to love you so much. I admired you. But as of today... I don't dare anymore. I can't afford to love you. Please, just let me go. I know I was wrong!"
By the end, her voice was completely shattered. Her knees buckled as she dropped to the floor, abandoning her pride entirely.
Yet, the man simply stood there. Even though the woman begging on her knees was his wife—supposedly carrying his child—he remained utterly unmoved.
It wasn't until her knees nearly hit the hardwood that he finally spoke again. "Mrs. Forrester, you're so incredibly capable that a titan of the industry, someone the Forrester family practically begged to attend, favored you at first glance. Why on earth are you begging me?"
Nova didn't understand. She looked up at him.
