Chapter B Rum the Harper Fami
Chapter 8 Ruin the Harper Family
It was already after 9 p.m. when they got back to the Harper family home.
Everyone was on the sofa, alternating between dabbing at tears and sharing looks of quiet relief.
Brianna sat next to her grandmother Caroline Harper, clasping her hand.
“I’ve reserved a spot at a restaurant,” she said. “Tomorrow, let’s all head out as a family and celebrate properly”
Caroline was in especially high spirits that day. “Did you pick up the fireworks? As soon as he crosses that gate, we have to set them off.”
“Yeah, I got them. Everything’s set.”
Caroline prattled on cheerfully, listing off one thing after another.
Brianna listened to the familiar nagging, her eyes welling up.
She turned away and happened to spot the flower blooming vividly on the balcony. After five long years, the family could finally be whole again.
The next morning, before the sun was even up, everyone was ready to go. Af precisely 6:00 a.m., her cousin Harland Harper swung open the door, and the group set off for the prison.
The drive took over an hour, and after they arrived, they waited another two before the heavy gates finally groaned open. Two guards escorted Mitch Harper out.
The family had already cried their eyes raw just waiting.
In those five years, Mitch had aged noticeably, but at least he still had that spark of energy about him.
They lit the fireworks, hugged through the sobs, and about half an hour later, the emotions started to settle. Everyone piled into the car and headed home.
It was already afternoon.
Brianna rounded up the group to go out, and they made their way to Cloud Restaurant, the upscale one.
Caroline adored their dishes. Back when Brianna’s mom Trina Harper was alive, the family came here all the time.
Even after Trina’s passing, they stuck with this place for special days. It felt like a ritual, a thread connecting them to the past.
The server guided them through the winding corridors and pavilions to a private room in the garden’s rear building. As they climbed the stairs, they bumped right into Brandon, who was pacing the hallway on his phone.
Everyone stopped short. Brianna acted like he wasn’t there, steadying Caroline and keeping them moving.
When Brandon noticed Caroline, he ended his call and stepped forward with a polite smile. “Caroline, it’s been ages, How’ ve you been?”
r Folks in their elite world never lorded it over familiar faces. Brianna figured his manners were more about honoring Josefina’s longstanding ties than showing any real warmth toward her family.
Brandon added, “Mitch, long time no see!”
Of all the things to bring up, he was really rubbing salt in the wound.
Caroline was well aware of the rift in their marriage and had no fondness for Brandon. Taking his words as a dig at the Harper family’s troubles, she let out a cold snort and swept past him into the room.
Vickie’s expression soured as well; she ignored him and followed right behind.
Only Mitch lingered, a mix of awkwardness and obligation, trading a few rote pleasantries with Brandon.
Before long, Mitch slipped back into the room and turned to Brianna. “What’s up with you and Brandon?”
He’d picked up on how the two hadn’t exchanged a single word. In his mind, Brianna had always been head over heels for Brandon.
“It’s nothing, just a minor spat a few days back.” Brianna didn’t want to burden him with worries, so she tossed out a quick excuse to sidestep it.
Mitch asked, “Where’s Kendra? If her dad’s tied up with work, who’s looking after her?”
The question hung awkwardly as soon as it left his lips. It was his first day out of prison, maybe the Levy family saw it as bad luck and kept Kendra away.
Chapter 8 Run the Haipei Familly
Catching his unease, Brianna jumped in to reassure him
She Said, “She’s ever at her grandma’s. I’m gearing up to launch my own jewelry design business, so I’ve left her with his mom for now Thaven’t even seen her myself in days. Once I wrap up this hectic stretch, I’ll pick her up
Talk of the jewelry venture steered the conversation in a new direction
Caroline had witnessed every hardship Brianna had faced these past years. The idea of Brianna starting her own thing thrilled her no end, and she peppered her with questions.
While they couldn’t match the Levy family’s stature, the Harper family was no stranger to business.
Both Mitch and Trina had been sharp entrepreneurs in their own right.
The family enterprises covered hotels, engineering, and logistics, earning them a solid reputation in Klamdiff.
A few years earlier, Trina had perished in a devastating car accident, and Mitch had ended up serving five years behind bars over a financial dispute.
With the successive loss of its key figures, the Harper family had fallen on hard times. Brianna had withdrawn into a quiet home life, devoting herself to Brandon and Kendra. Harland wasn’t old enough to help, so Vickie had been left to hold everything together on her own. Bit by bit, they’d had to sell off family assets as things spiraled downward. Brianna had begged Brandon for help more than once, but he’d dismissed her pleas and stood by idly.
The mention of jewelry sparked Mitch’s interest immediately. “That’s a solid plan, Brianna. Not to toot my own horn, but my first real windfall came from dealing in jewel back in the day.”
“Really? You’ll have to lend me your expertise sometime.”
The family was in high spirits, laughing and talking, until midway through the meal when Brandon swung the door open and strode in.
Brianna gave him a sour look. He’d always dodged invitations to the Harper family with one excuse or another. She thought, ‘Why is he turning up now like a bad penny?‘
Brandon plopped down beside her without a second thought, his liquor–scented breath washing over her. Irritated, she shifted her chair away.
His eyes were glassy. He’d obviously knocked back quite a few, but he had ironclad self–control. Even hammered, he could pass for completely sober.
He hadn’t always been that way. In his carefree younger days, he’d let the booze loosen him up. She thought, ‘When has he changed? When does he start keeping it together even when tipsy, never allowing himself to lose control?”
It must have been after that night… Brianna smiled thinly, her face calm and distant, like she was recalling a distant memory from another life….
“What do you think?” Brandon turned to her.
“What?” She blinked at him, totally zoned out and oblivious to the discussion.
His striking face had those sculpted lines, with eyes sparkling like stars against the night.
Even with divorce looming, that face still made her heart stutter.
“The kid mentioned fronting you some startup cash.” Noticing her distraction, Caroline piped up to fill her in. These days, Caroline wanted nothing to do with Brandon and avoided his name altogether, referring to him as “the kid” when she was in a decent mood, or “the Levy heir” when she wasn’t.
“Oh, no thanks, really!” Brianna quickly waved it off.
They were headed for divorce anyway; the less they saw of each other afterward, the better.
Brandon took the rejection in stride, unflappable as ever. “Suit yourself,” he replied.
Brianna snuck a peek at him, curious where he’d picked up that rock–solid composure. Nothing rattled him. He was always so cool and collected.
He stuck around a little longer before someone summoned him away, letting Brianna finally exhale in relief.
She was mentally prepared for the divorce but hadn’t told her family yet; she had no idea how Caroline would react. For now, in their eyes, she and Brandon were still husband and wife.
Since Mitch had just been released, it made sense for her to spend the night at the Harper family.
