screens set
everyone in position
I didn’t look at him immediately
I knew he was there
I could feel it
That presence
Familiar in a way I didn’t like
“Good morning everyone,” I said
calm
even
Professional smile in place
The one I give all clients
No exceptions
We started
I took them through the first layer
“Right now, your issue is not just the leak,” I said, tapping lightly on the screen
“It’s the narrative around the leak”
Slide changed
+25 P
Peaceful.
unporary.
I showered, changed into something light, then walked into the kids’ room.
They were both wrapped in their blankets like two small bundles of chaos waiting to happen.
I smiled.
Then
I attacked.
Tickles.
“Urghh, mom not this again!” Eli protested, already laughing.
Ava tried to maintain composure.
Failed immediately.
“Stop-this is unnecessary behavior,” she said, breathless.
I ignored both of them.
“Okay,” I said finally, standing up. “Uncle Marcus is coming in two hours.”
Silence.
Then instant movement.
Eli sat up.
“Two hours?” he repeated.
“Yes.”
“We are behind schedule.”
I blinked.
“We?”
Ava was already out of bed.
“I’ll supervise,” she said.
Effortless.
He looked at himself in the mirror and nodded.
“Yes,
” he said. “This is correct.”
Ava was next.
Which, somehow, was worse. 1
“I don’t want anything obvious,” she said immediately.
“Nothing obvious?” I repeated.
“Yes.”
“Define obvious.”
She gestured vaguely.
“Just… obvious.”
We went through her options.
She rejected most of them quietly.
No drama.
Just small head shakes that somehow carried judgment.
“This one?” I suggested.
+20 BS
She tilted her head.
Maybe.”
That’s the closest thing to approval you’ll get from Ava.
