She studied me for a moment.

“When Marcus told you he met Dave… how did you feel?”
I went still.
That question again.
“Annoyed,” I said.
She waited.
“…suspicious,” I added.
“Of Marcus?”
“No.”

“Of?”

Then t
“Of the situation.”
She nodded.
“Did you trust Marcus when he said it was a coincidence?”
I paused.
Longer this time.
“I want to,” I said carefully.
“That’s not what I asked.”
I exhaled.
“…I don’t know.”
Silence again.
But this one felt heavier.
She leaned back.
“Lydia, let’s be honest for a second.”
I nodded slowly.
“You’re not just reacting to Dave’s presence,” she said. “You’re reacting to what his presence represents.
I frowned.
“And that is?”
She looked at me.
“Good,” I muttered.
“But something,” she finished.
I leaned back.
Closed my eyes briefly.
Then opened them.
“I just want control,” I said quietly.
“Over what?”
“My life.”
She nodded.
“That makes sense.”
Then she smiled slightly.
“But control and avoidance are not the same thing.”
I exhaled.
“Yeah.”
We sat there for a while.
Talking.
