And that did it.
I looked down at his hand.
Then slowly back at him.
There was a time I would have softened.
Explained.
Stayed.
Not today.
“Let go.”
My voice was quiet.
Controlled.
He did.
Immediately.
“Sorry,” he said.
I didn’t move.
Didn’t sit.
Didn’t leave yet either.
And I hated that.
“I just want to talk to you.”
There it was.
That tone.
That same calm, controlled tone that used to make everything sound reasonable.
For one stupid second…
I almost listened.
Then I remembered everything.
“I don’t care,” I said.
He exhaled like that hit harder than he expected.
+20 830s
“Lydia
Don’t.”
I held his gaze.
Steady.
Cold.
“Don’t make me get a restraining order on you.’
That landed.
Good.
“I’m not stalking you,” he said quickly. “It’s a coincidence.”
I went still.
Not arrogance.
Not control
Something else.
Something… unfamiliar.
I looked away first.
Because I didn’t like that.
“Stay away from me,” I said.
Quieter this time.
More real.
And then I left.
Fast.
Too fast.
By the time I got to my car, my hands were shaking.
I didn’t even realize it until I dropped my keys once.
“Get it together,” I muttered.
I got in.
Started the engine.
Drove.
