I hesitated briefly before deciding honesty was easier than performance.
“He was upset I did not tell him about your birthday.”
Both twins went quiet for a second.
Then Ava tilted her head thoughtfully.
“That feels fair.”
I frowned immediately.
“Fair?”
Eli nodded slowly too.
“Yeah. If he is trying to be your dad, shouldn’t he know?” 1
I sat still for a second before shaking my head.
“No. That is not my job to babysit him into fatherhood.”
Ava blinked slowly.
“That sounds like you are angry.”

“I am not angry.”
Eli leaned forward slightly.

Ava leaned into me comfortably.
Bhugged my arm loosely like he wanted affection without admitting to it directly.
And honestly?
I hated how quickly my frustration melted around them.

Ava clapped once like she had personally been waiting for this moment her entire life.
“The designer is coming?” Ava asked suspiciously.
“Yes.”
Eli narrowed his eyes immediately.
“Is she nice?”
“I do not know,” I admitted honestly. “But she is professional.”
Ava nodded seriously.
“That is acceptable.”
I sighed deeply.
Children.
The rest of the morning disappeared embarrassingly fast. Breakfast negotiations. Outfit changes. Eli insisting he looked “more creatively prepared” in mismatched socks. Ava trying to brush her own hair and somehow making herself look like she had survived a small electrical accident.
By noon, the house already felt charged with anticipation.
Then the doorbell rang.
