Emotions
Lydia POV
Marcus shook his head immediately.
“Lydia. Kids get sick.”
“But tomorrow is their birthday.”
“And tomorrow can still happen.”
I looked down at my hands.
“What if I have to cancel everything?”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“No,” he admitted softly. “But I know you. And I know those kids are loved enough to survive one rough day.”
The silence after that felt softer somehow.
Less suffocating.
Marcus stayed far longer than I expected him to.
Not in an intrusive way.
Not in that dramatic “I am here to save you” type of way either.
He simply stayed.
Marcus leaned back slightly on the couch and said casually, “Do you know Eli once told me octopuses are probably secretly running the government?”
I blinked.
“What?”
“He was very serious about it too,” Marcus continued with a straight face. “He said humans underestimate sea creatures because they cannot pay taxes.”
A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.
A small one.
Weak.
But still a laugh.
Marcus pointed immediately. “There. That’s better.”
I rubbed my forehead tiredly. “I genuinely cannot believe this is happening right now.”
“He’s going to be okay.”
“I hate this feeling.”
“What feeling?”
“The helplessness.” My throat tightened slightly. “I can fix business problems. I can solve financial disasters. I can build things from scratch. But when it comes to my children…” I swallowed hard. “One small thing happens and suddenly I feel useless.”
Marcus became quieter after that.
The kind that let emotions breathe without forcing them bigger.
Then eventually he said, “You know one of my favorite things about Ava and Eli?”
I looked at him weakly. “What?”
“They trust you completely.”
Something inside my chest pulled tighter.
“They walk through life like the world is safe because you exist in it. Do you understand how rare that is?”
1 stared at him silently.
Marcus continued casually, like he wasn’t saying something devastatingly important.
“Kids don’t become emotionally secure by having perfect parents. They become secure by having parents who show up consistently.” He shrugged lightly. “And you show up for them in ridiculous ways.”
I looked down quickly because emotion was beginning to climb too close to the surface.
