Guests began arriving shortly after six in the evening, and suddenly the house no longer felt like my house anymore.

It felt like an event.

“Lydia, this place is insane,” she said immediately while staring around. “Do you know my son has been talking about this birthday all week?”

I laughed.

“That’s pressure I did not need.”

Another parent walked in holding twins identical enough to make me emotionally nervous.

“Happy birthday to your babies,” she smiled warmly.

“Thank you,” I replied genuinely. “Please let the kids go wild. We already accepted destruction as part of the experience.”
