Too Late To Love Me I Already Left With His Twins (Lydia and Dave) novel Chapter 263

“Yes,”

“It is scary.”

She didn’t soften the word.

“But it’s understandable.”

She placed the pen down.

“And absolutely no euphemisms like ‘Mommy is sleeping.”

“Because they’ll associate sleep with dying.”

“Exactly. Especially if they’re already frightened.”

I nodded.

“Third?”

“No graphic details.”

She spoke firmly now.

“We don’t tell them about the condition of the car. We don’t describe blood. We don’t describe injuries. We don’t tell them things they don’t need to know.”

I hesitated.

“What about-”

I stopped.

Anna looked at me.

“What?”

“Did she…”

I couldn’t finish it.

Her face changed.

“Is that important right now?”

I looked away.

No.

It wasn’t.

Not to the children.

Not tonight.

Anna raised her fourth finger.

“Reassurance.”

She leaned back slightly.

“This is the most important part.”

“How do we reassure them when we don’t know what happens next?”

“We don’t promise what we can’t guarantee.”

She spoke slowly.

“We don’t say, ‘Mommy will definitely be okay.’ Because neither of us knows that.”

My chest tightened.

Instead, she continued, “We tell them what we do know. Mommy is receiving care. The doctors are looking after her. We are here with them. They are safe. They can ask questions. They can feel whatever they’re feeling.”

I nodded.

“And if they ask whether she’s going to die?”

Anna’s eyes lowered briefly.

“We don’t lie.”

The words hung between us.

“We tell them that we don’t know what will happen yet, but the doctors are doing everything they can to help her.”

She took a slow breath.

“No.”

A faint, exhausted smile touched her lips.

“But I’m going anyway.”

I understood exactly what she meant.

I pushed myself out of the chair.

My legs felt strangely heavy.

For a moment, they didn’t seem to belong to me at all. I stood there with one hand against the edge of the desk, breathing slowly through my nose.

I had never imagined this.

Not once.

I had imagined explaining divorce.

Explaining why Mommy and Daddy lived separately.

Explaining difficult things adults sometimes had to explain to children.

But this?

Never.

I looked at Anna.

She nodded once.

I straightened my shoulders.

“Okay.”

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

“Let’s get this done.”

And together, we walked toward the stairs.
