Lydia POV
When I woke up that morning, the first thing I noticed was the empty space beside me.
I stared at it for a few seconds, still half-asleep, my mind taking its sweet time catching up with reality. The sheets were slightly wrinkled where Dave had been, but he was gone. For some reason, that made something in my chest feel strangely unsettled. Not because I wanted him there—well, maybe I did—but because it felt weird that he had actually listened to me.
Apparently, Dave Ashton was a man of his word.
I had told him the night before that I thought it would be better if he spent only a couple of hours in my room and then went back to his own. He had agreed without arguing, without trying to negotiate, without making me feel guilty about it. And now here I was, staring at the empty side of the bed like I had somehow expected him to ignore me.
I rubbed my face and sat up.
“Okay, Lydia. You asked for this.”
I wasn’t sure why I was saying it out loud. There was nobody there to hear me.
After freshening up, I headed downstairs, mostly because I wanted my cinnamon tea and partly because staying upstairs alone with my thoughts had never been a particularly productive activity. My hair was still slightly damp, and I was enjoying the faint scent of my shower gel when I walked into the living area and saw Dave.
He was there, looking entirely too comfortable for someone who had apparently spent the night obeying my ridiculous sleeping arrangement. He looked up when he heard me.
I smiled before I could stop myself. “Heyyy.”
His face immediately softened.
“Hi, babe.”
I paused.
There it was again.
That word.
I chuckled as I walked closer. “I can never get used to being called babe.”
Dave’s mouth curved into a smile, and before I could move away, he stepped closer and leaned down, his face disappearing briefly into the crook of my neck. He took a slow breath, and I felt the faint brush of his nose against my skin.
“What are you wearing?” he murmured.
I blinked. “What?”
He lifted his head slightly, still close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath. “You smell really nice.”
I looked down at myself as though the answer might be written on my clothes. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
“It’s probably my shower gel,” I said, then shrugged. “And maybe my innate scent.”
He looked amused.
“Your innate scent?”
“Yes.” I nodded with complete seriousness. “You know. My natural factory settings.”
He laughed quietly. “I like it.”
Something about the simplicity of those three words made me smile.
I looked away, suddenly interested in absolutely anything except his face.
Then I remembered something.
“Sooo, Dave…”
He looked at me.
“I think I did something wrong yesterday.”
My fingers immediately became fascinating. I looked down at them, rubbing my thumb over one nail while I tried to figure out how exactly I was supposed to apologize to a man I had spent half of yesterday telling to sleep somewhere else.
Gosh.
How was I supposed to tell this man sorry without making it sound like I was admitting to a crime?
I took a breath.
“I’m sorry.”
Dave’s brows pulled together slightly. “For what?”
He stepped around me until he was directly in front of me, forcing me to look up at him.
I groaned. “Urgh. Are you trying to get me to spell it out?”
The teasing tone came naturally, but the look on his face told me immediately that he genuinely had no idea what I was talking about.
He wasn’t playing with me.
He was actually confused.
I sighed. “For how I spoke yesterday about the sleeping situation.”
