“Anna!”
My voice bounced through the garden.
I stopped right in the middle of the pathway, staring at the ridiculous amount of effort that had clearly gone into whatever was happening ahead of me.
“What is this?”
I looked around again.
“Hold up.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“I hope I’m not walking into somebody else’s surprise or party.”
Because this was not a stroll.
This was not women in their thirties walking around talking about life while taking cute pictures.
This was an entire production.
There were warm lights strung between the trees, candles flickering along the edges of the pathway, flowers arranged in places that looked almost too intentional, and a beautifully set table sitting beneath the glow of the evening sky.
I slowly shook my head.
“This Anna babe…”
I muttered under my breath.
“This looks really fancy.”
I looked behind me.
Nothing.
Ahead of me, the pathway continued.
To my left, there was a hedge.
To my right, more flowers and trees.
There wasn’t an obvious detour.
So, with the reluctant confidence of someone who had already made a mistake and was now committed to finishing it, I kept walking.
Maybe the actual park was somewhere ahead.
Maybe I’d somehow taken the wrong path.
Maybe Anna had sent me to the wrong entrance.
Maybe—
Then I saw him.
A man in a suit stood farther ahead, his back turned toward me.
I slowed down.
Oh.
Definitely somebody’s surprise.
I immediately felt embarrassed.
“Erm…”
He didn’t turn.
“Sorry to ruin your surprise.”
Still nothing.
I took another step.
“I’m actually here to meet my friend. I think I might have missed the road.”
I glanced around again.
“I just needed to apologize before I left because, honestly, this looks like something that had a lot of work put into it.”
My face was already burning.
Of course.
Of all the things I could have done this evening, I had somehow wandered into somebody else’s romantic setup.
I mentally cursed Anna.
Repeatedly.
Look at the mess you’ve made of yourself, Lydia.
I turned slightly, preparing to retrace my steps.
Then the man spoke.
“No, wait.”
I froze.
My entire body went still.
That voice.
No.
Absolutely not.
My heart seemed to recognize it before my brain was willing to accept what it was hearing.
I slowly turned my head.
No.
That sounded like Dave.
No, it couldn’t.
Why would Dave be here?
My mind immediately started scrambling for explanations.
Maybe I was imagining it.
Maybe I’d been thinking about him too much.
Maybe my brain had simply taken a familiar voice and inserted it into an embarrassing situation because apparently humiliation wasn’t enough.
Gosh.
I think I’m obsessed with this man.
Why am I imagining Dave here?
I am such a finished woman.
