A man. 1
Hood up.
Walking straight at me.
“Hey”
I stepped back.
He reached for my bag.
Hard.
Too hard.
I held on.
Instinct.
He pulled again.
My balance shifted.
And then
Everything moved too fast.
Another movement.
Between us.
Marcus.
I didn’t see him arrive.
Just felt it.
The interruption.
“Let go,” Marcus said.
Calm.
Too calm.

The man didn’t.
course he didn’t.
It escalated quickly.
A struggle.
A shove.
A misstep.
Something hit concrete.
Then silence.
The man ran.
I stood close.
Still.
“You didn’t have to do that,” I said.
“I know.”
“Then why did you?”
He looked at me.
Steady.
“Because you were there.”
That was it.
No speech.
No performance.
Just fact.
I sat down slowly.
Across from him.
Hands folded.
Mind louder than I liked.
