CHAPTER 375 GET A ROOM
CHAPTER 373: GET A ROOM
KNOX’S POV
The imperious mask flickers. Under it, my real Ember flushes, just slightly, pleased, and her mouth softens for half a second before she wrestles the character back on.
“Mm.” She reaches out and adjusts my collar with one manicured finger, a small proprietary touch, a woman fixing her possession. “Jealous already. And we haven’t even left.” Her eyes/gleam. You’re going to be insufferable tonight, aren’t you.”
“Deeply.” I catch the hand at my collar, turn it, press my mouth to the inside of her wrist, right over the pulse, and feel it jump. “You look like sin in that dress, Ember. I’m going to spend the whole
drive thinking about getting you out of it.”
“That is not-” and there she cracks, the flush spreading, her voice dropping out of the character
entirely into a scandalized whisper, “-Knox, there are people-”
“GET A ROOM.”
Queenie basically shrieks, and Ember jumps back from me, and Queenie is coming down the stairs
behind her with her arms thrown wide in theatrical despair.
“I spent five hours on this woman! Five hours! There is a team upstairs packing up their brushes! And you two are down here about to smudge my entire afternoon’s work with your-your whispering and your-” she gestures at the pair of us, the wrist, the collar, the whole thing “-your filth. We have a heist. We have a schedule. Nathaniel is standing on a helipad downtown right now,

Save it for after. Save it for literally any moment that is not the moment I need Merrilyn Aster to walk out that door looking like she’s never been touched by a man she didn’t pay for.”
“He started it,” Ember says, and it’s so unlike Merrilyn and so exactly like Ember that I nearly laugh.

She takes in the scene-Ember transformed, me in my black, Queenie mid-tirade-with that mild,
pleasant unreadable expression, and something about the way her eyes move over Ember, slow,

cataloguing, makes Phantom stir low in my chest.
“Don’t you look a picture,” Hale says to Ember. It could be a compliment. It isn’t. “Off to your business, then.”
Ember’s whole demeanor changes-the warmth I just put in her face ices straight over, and she
pulls the Merrilyn hauteur back on like armor, looking at Hale down the length of her nose.
“We’ll be a few hours. You’ll manage without us.”
“Oh, I’ll take wonderful care of the house while you’re away.” Hale smiles, and it doesn’t touch her eyes. “Don’t you fret about a single thing here, sweetheart. Everything will be exactly as it ought to
be by the time you’re home.”
“We’ll be back soon,” Ember says, sharp, and I can hear she’s caught the same wrong note I have
And Hale’s smile widens, just slightly, soft and pleasant and cold under.
