CHAPTER 374: ONE LAST MISTAKE

KNOX’S POV

And I understand exactly what she’s doing-burying the ugliness of Hale under something warmer, pulling us back out of the cold-so I follow her lead, and I let the corner of my mouth curl, and I dip my head, all mock contrition.

“You’re quite right, Lady Aster. A grave error on my part.” I hold her gaze. “How do you plan to punish me for it?”

The flush is instant, and furious, and she fights it valiantly.

“That is-that is no way to-”

“Anything,” I go on, lower, “like the handcuffs?”

Her eyes go wide, and the color floods all the way up her throat, and she makes a small strangled sound, and Queenie, behind her, makes an entirely different sound, delighted and scandalized.”

That,” Ember hisses, scrabbling for the character and losing, “is no way to talk to your boss-”

“No?” I take a slow step in, closing the gap, insufferable, thoroughly enjoying myself for the first time all day. “Then how would you have me talk to you, ma’am? Because I’m your man for the night. I’ll speak to you however you like.” I let it hang. “Just tell me how you like it.”

For one second she has absolutely nothing-my clever, sharp-tongued fiancée, rendered speechless and scarlet, torn clean down the middle between the character she’s supposed to be playing and the woman who wants very much to say something back and cannot do it with a hall full of witnesses-and it is, without question, my favorite thing that has happened

in days.

“Okay,” Queenie announces loudly, physically inserting herself between us with both hands. Okay. Nope. We are leaving. Right now. Before I have to watch my best friend combust in a dress I spent five hours engineering. Into the car, both of you, arm’s length, no touching, no talking-Nathaniel is going to have an aneurysm on that helipad and I refuse to be blamed for it.” She steers Ember toward the door by the shoulders, and Ember goes, shooting me one last look over her shoulder-flushed, furious, and underit, unmistakably, pleased.

I catch the look. I hold it. And I mouth, handcuffs, just to watch her nearly trip over her own

gown.

Then I follow them out into the evening, past Hale standing silent at the foot of the stairs

with her folded hands and her cold, pleasant smile, and I feel her eyes on my back the whole way to the car-

-and just for a moment, the warmth of the last five minutes thins, and Phantom lifts his head, and I glance back once at my cousin watching us go, and every instinct I’ve spent years learning to trust goes coldly still.

But Ember is climbing into the car in her stranger’s skin, flushed and laughing at something Queenie’s said, and Nathaniel is waiting on a helipad for us.

So I get in beside her.
