CHAPTER 376 LADY ASTER

CHAPTER 376: LADY ASTER

EMBER’S POV

A valet who appears to file his teeth for a hobby opens my door.

And I step out into Casino Royale, Casino Royale on the invitation, the Slaughterhouse to everyone who actually comes here, and I make myself look bored.

It is the single hardest thing I have ever done.

Because the place is depravity made flesh.

We come up out of the stone into a cavern that somebody has poured a king’s fortune into making beautiful and filthy in equal measure, gold everywhere, black marble veined with something that glows, honeyed light spilling from nowhere and pooling like liquor.

And the liveliness of it is quite the surprise.

Dancers are on raised platforms and swinging around gold poles, barely dressed and utterly unbothered, moving as though the music flows directly from their veins.

A woman is reclining on a chaise being fed grapes by two shirtless men who are visibly competing for the honour.

A fountain is running with something dark and effervescent, and people are drinking from it directly, on their knees, laughing.

A man goes by on a leash, led by a woman in white, and neither of them looks the least bit

sorry.

Someone is carried overhead on a litter like a debauched empress. A glass shatters somewhere, and a whole corner erupts in delighted screaming.

The air is thick with smoke and perfume and something sweeter and the musk of fresh sex.

I have never seen anything like it in my life. It is, without competition, the most shocking thing I have ever laid eyes on.

“Papers.”

I jump. A rogue bouncer has materialised dead in my path. He’s huge, heavily tattooed, and looking at me with the specific, aggressive boredom of a man who throws people out of moving vehicles for a living.

“Invite and ID,” he demands, holding out a hand.

CHAPTER 376 LADY ASTER

Panic seizes my throat. I freeze entirely.

For a horrible, stretched second, I am just Ember, caught trespassing in a den of killers Knox steps up right behind my shoulder, close enough that I can feel the heart radiating off him ready to dismantle the man.

The heat grounds me. Right. I’m the danger tonight.

I relax my spine. I don’t reach into my purse. Instead, I look the bouncer slowly up and down letting my lip curl in absolute, withering disgust.

“Did no one teach you how to address a quest?” I drawl, my voice dripping with icy condescension. “Or do they just drag you out of the alleys and put you straight in a suit?”

The bouncer bristles, stepping forward.

“Look, lady-”

I pull the authentic black-market invitation and the forged ID from my clutch and hold them out with two fingers, looking entirely away from him as if looking at his face pains me

He snatches them. He swipes the card, reads the screen, and his arrogant sneer completely vanishes. He clears his throat, suddenly looking pale under his tattoos.

“Right this way, Lady Aster,” he stammers, stepping far out of my path and offering the cards back with both hands. “My deepest apologies for the delay. The house is yours.”

I take them back without looking at him, letting out a sharp, irritated breath.

“Adequate,” I announce, to nobody, examining my nails.

A man peels away from the gold chaos of the room and glides toward us, and he is almost the most beautiful person I have ever seen and simultaneously the most alarming – tall, elegant, dove-grey, a sharp smile promising both trouble and professionalism, depending on what day it is.

“Lady Aster.” He takes my hand and kisses it. I hold very still and think ferociously about how bored I am, and not about my trigger-happy boyfriend. “Welcome to Casino Royale. I’m Cassian; I’ll be your guide tonight. We so rarely have the pleasure of a first-time patron with such… specific requirements.” His smile sharpens. “Yours were noted. All of them. One or two, I’ll admit, twice.”

“I should hope so, for the invoice.” I take my hand back and let my gaze drift past him, bored, cataloguing exits the way Knox drilled into me. “I trust the discretion matches the pricing. I don’t come to places like this to become some fool’s brunch gossip.”
