CHAPTER 375: INTO THE MOUNTAIN
EMBER’S POV
The mountain swallows the car whole.
There’s no door or glittering red sign that announces this as the entrance to the most dangerous casino on the continent.
A road runs straight into a wall of black rock. Just as we’re about to hit, the stone opens, and the car glides down a throat of polished stone, deep into the belly of the mountain, and behind us, the rock seals shut like a mouth finishing a meal.
“Cute,” I say, because Merrilyn Aster is not impressed by geology. “Very theatrical. Someone’s compensating.”
Beside me, Knox says nothing.
Knox can’t say anything because Knox is currently a bodyguard in black, with a surgical mask over the lower half of his face, to cover a weeping rash so contagious and so grotesque that no sane creature will ask him to lift it.
Only his eyes show. And those eyes have been promising me a slow and thorough death since the moment we left home, which, if I’m honest, is doing something for me.
He’s also, at this exact moment, not perfectly himself, and that is the part that makes my stomach turn over every time I let myself think about it.
Ten minutes before the mountain, Knox drank the vial Nathaniel gave him. It was a dark, rogue-made sludge, foul enough to make even him wince, but he swallowed it without a
word.
It was designed to scrub a wolf’s scent down to absolute zero. With it, there is no trace of an Alpha or Lycan in him.
The Slaughterhouse smells what you are before it sees your face, and no physical disguise can hide an Alpha from a room full of people trained to hate them.
“What’s it doing to you?” I’d asked him in the car, watching the tight, controlled way he was breathing, watching his jaw work.
“I’m fine.”
“Knox, don’t bullshit me.”

He let out a slow breath.
“It’s heavy,” he said finally. “It feels like the tail end of a very long, very ugly fight, which burns off most of your strength and life essence.” He pauses. “I’m running on half. Maybe less. It’ll come back when it burns out.”
Half.
The most dangerous man on the continent, walking into a mountain full of people who would gut him for sport, carrying half of his strength.
A cold dread settles down my spine. Unease twists my gut into a tight knot.
What if something goes wrong? What if they clock his scent, the doors lock, and a fight breaks out while he’s operating at half his strength? My heart races, the what-ifs piling up fast enough to choke me.
Knox glances over, catching my spiral instantly. A small smile tips the edge of his lips. I can tell from the spark in his eyes.
“Don’t tell me you’re sweating over my safety. Did you forget everything I taught you this
week?”
“Did you forget how thoroughly Hale beat me?” I retort, my voice tight. “She’s nothing compared to rogue killers.”
“And those rogues are nothing compared to you.” He shifts, easing back into the leather seat with a wicked, unapologetic grin. “You know why I’m not sweating over this, darling? Because my wife is going to be the most dangerous thing in that room. You’re the danger, Ember. Not them.”
A spark of warmth comes to life in my chest, extending to everywhere else faster than I can stop it, until I’m sharing a conspiratorial grin with my partner in crime.
I lean over and murmur, just for him, “Fine. Try not to look like you’re planning eleven murders though. It’s a fun night out. We’re two carefree criminals.”
“I’ve counted the exits,” he murmurs back. “There are four. I’ve already decided which two I’m carrying you out of.”
“With half your strength?”
“With a quarter of it, if it comes to that.” His eyes cut to mine, and there’s nothing tired in them at all. “Don’t mistake the herb for a weakness, baby. It slowed my arms. It didn’t touch my temper.

“So romantic.”
And under all of it, sitting in me like a stone I can’t put down, is Rayana.
