CHAPTER 386: UNCLE SILAS?
EMBER’S POV
The record scratches.
The entire room goes dead silent.
My brain… breaks.
The rogues trade lost, confused looks. Knox’s head comes up slow, his gold eyes narrowi
And I stand there perfectly still while the word goes off in my skull, over and over.
Brother. Silas is her brother. The Rogue King is her brother.
Which means-
Silas Black goes completely motionless.
I watch the crime lord who was ten seconds from unleashing his rogues to execute us turn his enormous frame away from Knox. He looks at his sister. Then he looks at me.
He crosses the space in two strides, ignoring Knox, ignoring the gun, and reaches out with one huge scarred hand, gentle as anything, to take my chin and tilt my face up into the light.
He looks at me.
Nobody has ever looked at me like this. Searching. Hungry. Disbelieving.
His dark eyes trace my cheekbones, the shape of my mouth, the colour of my irises, and a terrible dawn breaks over his scarred face, and the hand at my chin starts to shake.
“Devika,” he says, still not looking away from me. “Why is this girl wearing our mother’s eyes?
“Silas-”
“Why does a liar on my floor-” he turns my face a fraction, his voice dropping to a rasp.”-a girl I have never met in my life, have the exact face of the woman who raised us?”
He drops his hand and rises to his full staggering height, turning to his sister. The gentle crime lord is gone. What’s left standing there makes every rogue in the room step back.
My heart pounds, brain trying desperately to catch up, contusion warring with everything i believed I knew about myself and my mother.

“Who is she, Devika?”
Cornered, caught, a lie of a lifetime coming apart at the seams, my mother does the only thing she has ever known how to do.
She scrambles.
“She’s nobody!” It comes too fast, too shrill. “She’s a lunatic, Silas, she’s unwell, she’s been stalking me. You can’t believe a word out of her mouth. She’s the Lycan’s whore, and this is their plan-”
“You told me she died.”
He says it quietly, and Devika hits a wall of silence.
“A few years ago.” He takes a step toward her, and she shrinks back on her knees. “I caught up to you. Do you remember, sister? Half-starved, terrified, pregnant to the eyes, hunted out of the East. You put your face in your hands, and you wept, and you told me the baby was stillborn. Buried in eastern ground with nothing left to carry home.”
His voice trembles with something vast and terrible.
“I grieved that child, Devika. A niece I never got to hold. I was so angry that I turned you away, told you never to show me your face again, because if you hadn’t been so reckless the child would have lived. I lit a candle for her every year on the day you told me she was born. For years I have mourned a baby you swore to me was in the ground. It took you crawling back a few weeks ago for me to finally forgive you and let you home.” He turns, slow, and looks down at me. “And she has been alive. This entire time.”
I stand there, the cut on my arm stinging, and I can’t get a single word out.
The grief and the fury land in the same instant, hard enough that my lungs seize
Silas had mourned me?
He believed all this well I was dead?
All because of this snivelling witch of a mother.

And I round on her, because I cannot help it, because the betrayal of it is a fresh wound on top of every old one.
“What the fuck is wrong with?! You told me they were dead,” I say, my voice shaking, dragging her up by the collar of her cloth. “All of them! My whole life. Every time I asked if I had anyone, anyone at all, you told me there was no one, that our family was gone, that it was just you and me and I should be grateful-” My breath catches. “You had a brother. I had an uncle. And you let me grow up believing I was alone in the world.”
Devika looks at me, and there’s no shame in it, none, just that flat, cold Devika stare, and she shrugs one shoulder like I’ve asked her about the weather.
“Well.” Her mouth curls. “Surprise, bitch. Meet your uncle Silas.” A brittle little wave of her hand. “He’s a delight.”
