Percy shot him a deadpan look. "Because Miss Ivy is inside."
"I know that."
"Then stop complaining."
"I’m not complaining," Benny whispered. "I’m expressing reasonable concern for my continued survival."
Nico smirked.
"Survival?"
Benny pointed toward the ceiling.
"Look at this place! It’s straight out of a horror movie."
A loose plank suddenly shifted somewhere upstairs.
Creaaak...
Benny nearly jumped out of his skin.
"What was that?"
Percy sighed.
"The wind."
"How do you know?"
"Because ghosts don’t usually weigh enough to make floorboards creak."
"You don’t know that."
Teddy continued walking without looking back.
"If a ghost attacks you, let me know."
Benny hurried after him.
"You’re making fun of me now."
"No."
"You absolutely are."
Nico chuckled.
"I never thought the man who once charged into a warehouse full of armed smugglers would be scared of an empty house."
"Smugglers carry guns," Benny argued.
"They’re predictable."
He gestured dramatically around them.
"This place has... paranormal possibilities."
Percy burst into laughter.
"So you’re saying you’d rather fight twenty assassins than one ghost?"
"Without hesitation."
"You’ve lost your mind."
"No," Benny corrected seriously.
"I’ve watched too many horror films."
Another loud thud echoed from somewhere deeper inside the house.
Bang!
Benny instantly grabbed Percy’s arm.
"There!"
Percy looked down at the hand clutching his sleeve.
"Would you let go?"
"What if something jumps out?"
"Then I’ll introduce you first."
"You call yourself a teammate?"
"I’m trying to save myself."
Teddy pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Would all of you keep your voices down?"
The group immediately fell silent.
They carefully moved through what had once been the living room before reaching the burned doorway leading into the backyard.
Teddy suddenly stopped.
"So she’s here."
The others followed his gaze.
Fresh footprints marked the dirt.
They led toward the far end of the yard.
Without another word, the four men cautiously advanced, scanning every corner.
The overgrown grass rustled softly in the breeze.
The backyard was eerily quiet.
Too quiet.
Benny swallowed nervously.
"I don’t like this."
"You don’t like anything today," Percy muttered.
"I like sunshine."
"I noticed."
Nico crouched near the footprints.
"They’re fresh."
"She can’t be far."
Just then—
Something moved.
A dark figure suddenly sprang up from behind a pile of collapsed bricks.
"AAAHHH!"
Benny screamed at the top of his lungs and stumbled backward, crashing straight into Percy.
Percy lost his balance and knocked into Nico.
Within a split second, all three men landed in a tangled heap on the ground.
"Get it off me!"
"There isn’t anything on you!"
"I don’t know that!"
"I’m being crushed!"
"You’re crushing me!"
Even Teddy instinctively reached for the pistol at his waist before freezing.
The mysterious figure stared at the four men in complete confusion.
"...Seriously?"
The familiar voice made Teddy’s shoulders relax.
"Miss Ivy?"
Ivy slowly lowered the flashlight she had been holding.
Her eyes swept across the four operatives piled on top of one another.
Then she looked directly at Benny.
"...Were you just screaming?"
Benny immediately cleared his throat and stood as if nothing had happened.
"No."
Percy stared at him.
"You screamed loud enough to wake the dead."
Benny straightened his jacket with all the dignity he could muster.
"I was conducting an... emergency sound test."
Nico couldn’t hold it in any longer.
He burst into laughter.
Even Teddy let out a quiet sigh before shaking his head.
Since when have they been following me?

Don’t tell me...
Have they been following me everywhere?
Oh, goodness...
Does Xander know every place I’ve been? Every person I’ve met?
