Yet Gavin refused to back down.
"I don’t believe it."
His breathing had grown uneven as frustration took over.
"That marriage certificate is fake."
"It has to be."
"You fabricated it to protect your reputations."
Before anyone could respond—
A deep, authoritative voice echoed through the conference room.
"Who says the certificate is fake?"
The doors slowly swung open.
Every head turned toward the entrance.
Edward Emerson walked in with Butler Ben by his side.
Though age had slowed his steps, it had done nothing to diminish the commanding presence he carried.
The moment the directors saw him, they instinctively rose to their feet.
"Chairman Emerson..."
Edward paid them no attention.
His sharp gaze landed directly on Gavin.
"I was personally present when they registered their marriage."
His voice was calm, yet it carried an authority that silenced the entire room.
"I signed the marriage register as one of the witnesses."
He stopped beside Xander and looked at Gavin with disappointment.
"So unless you’re accusing me of committing fraud..."
Edward’s eyes narrowed.
"...there is absolutely no possibility that my grandson is lying."
He paused before adding,
"Unless, of course, you’re simply desperate to prove him wrong."
The words struck Gavin like a slap across the face.
His expression turned pale.
He opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out.
Edward raised his cane and struck it firmly against the floor.
*Tap!*
The crisp sound echoed throughout the conference room.
He then stood beside Xander, his posture straight despite his age, and faced everyone seated around the table.
His mere presence was enough to make the atmosphere even more oppressive.
Across the table, Mr. Hayes discreetly glanced at Gavin.
Only moments ago, Gavin had appeared completely confident.
Now, he looked cornered.
Realizing the situation had completely turned against them, Mr. Hayes immediately shifted his stance.
He stood up and bowed his head slightly.
"Chairman Emerson, President Xander..."
"We sincerely apologize."
"We had no idea President Xander was already married."
"We allowed ourselves to be influenced by the rumors circulating online."
One after another, the remaining directors followed suit.
"We apologize, President Xander."
"It was never our intention to question your integrity."
"We simply wanted clarification for the sake of the company."
"Our concerns have now been resolved."
Even those who had aggressively questioned Xander earlier lowered their heads.
Watching the sudden change in attitude, Gavin’s hands slowly clenched beneath the table.
Everything...
Everything had slipped out of his control.
He had been certain today’s meeting would weaken Xander’s position.
He had expected the board to question Xander’s leadership and perhaps even propose limiting his authority as president.
Instead...
The emergency meeting had only strengthened Xander’s credibility.
Not only had Xander cleared every allegation, but he had also earned even greater respect from the board by addressing the issue openly.
Gavin’s carefully planned attack had collapsed before his eyes.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes burned with resentment as he stared at Xander.
Edward, however, didn’t spare Gavin another glance.
He simply turned toward the board members.
"I trust today’s misunderstanding has been resolved."
His voice was calm, but no one dared challenge him.
"From this moment onward, I expect everyone to remember one thing."
"My grandson’s private life has nothing to do with Globe International’s operations."
"If anyone wishes to question his capability as President..."
Edward’s gaze swept across the room.
"...then bring evidence related to his performance."
"Not gossip."
The conference room fell completely silent.
No one uttered another word.
After a long moment, Edward turned toward Xander.
The stern expression on his face softened ever so slightly.
Without saying a word, he gave his grandson a knowing look.
Xander met his grandfather’s eyes.
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
Nothing more needed to be said.
Both of them understood that today’s battle had ended exactly as it should have—with truth speaking louder than rumor.
***
The meeting concluded shortly afterward.
With the rumors finally put to rest, the board members quietly gathered their documents and began leaving the conference room.
Many of them offered Xander apologetic nods before making their way out.
Seeing that everyone else had left, Gavin picked up his briefcase and turned toward the exit.
"Stop."
Edward’s commanding voice echoed through the room.
Gavin’s footsteps froze. Slowly, he turned around.
His heart skipped a beat when he met his grandfather’s cold, piercing gaze.
"Grandpa..."
Before he could say another word—
"Instead, he sells exclusive information to multiple news agencies."
Gavin’s expression stiffened.
Taylor continued.
"Approximately twenty minutes after your conversation ended, Mr. Lane forwarded a file containing Young Master Leo’s daily school schedule..."
"...along with the exact dismissal time and the entrance he uses to leave Daffodil Academy."
Another document appeared on the screen.
"We’ve also obtained CCTV footage from the café where the two of you met yesterday morning."
A still image filled the display. It clearly showed Gavin sitting across from Victor Lane.
Between them lay a sealed envelope.
Taylor tapped once more.
"The envelope contained cash."
"The payment was transferred shortly afterward through an intermediary account."
Another document appeared.
"The account belongs to one of your personal assistants."
Silence filled the room.
Taylor looked directly at Gavin.
"Would you like me to continue?"
For the first time, Gavin’s composure cracked.
His face gradually lost all color.
"That’s..."
"I..."
His lips parted, but no explanation came.
Edward looked at him with visible disappointment.
"So this is how you’ve chosen to compete with your own cousin."
"By bribing the media."
"By exposing his family."
"And worst of all..."
His voice turned colder.
"By terrifying an innocent child."
Gavin couldn’t understand how Edward had uncovered everything.
He had made sure to cover his tracks.
So how...
Before he could gather his thoughts, he suddenly felt someone grab him by the collar.
His eyes widened.
Xander had crossed the room in just a few strides.
Without a word, he yanked Gavin to his feet, his grip so tight that Gavin struggled to breathe.
For the first time, Gavin saw genuine fury in his cousin’s eyes.
They were bloodshot, cold, and devoid of mercy.
"You targeted my son," Xander said, his voice dangerously quiet.
"You wanted to use a six-year-old child to get back at me."
He tightened his grip.
"So now..."
"...I’ll come after you."
A chill ran down Gavin’s spine.
